Orange KING, Aaron N. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 234-235 (portrait p 235) Aaron N. KING, of Tunbridge [Orange County, Vermont], was born 01 July 1820 in Randolph [Orange County, Vermont], son of Eld. Nathaniel and Lydia (NOYES) KING. His father Elder [Nathaniel] KING was one of the earliest settlers of Tunbridge, and was one of the first preachers of the Freewill Baptist denomination west of the Connecticut River. So marked was his ability many were the revivals that followed his preaching. Through his efforts largely was the first conference of the denomination organized at Tunbridge. To him came the committee appointed to prepare articles of faith, and the doctrines outlined by him and written down by the committee were the articles of faith found in the Treatise of the denomination. He preached from stumps in the woods, in barns, and later in houses of worship. The days not spent in preaching were spent in labor and by his frugality and industry he accumulated a large property. He represented Tunbridge in the state legislature thirteen years, and held many offices of trust; he found time, however, for study, and was noted as a Bible student and theologian in the yearly meetings of the denomination in the state. Mr. Aaron N. KING was the youngest of thirteen children. In his earlier business life he was a farmer and was successful in this pursuit. In 1854 he embarked in mercantile business in Tunbridge, and is still engaged in it. At about the same time he engaged in banking and was for several years a director in the Royalton bank [Windsor County, Vermont]. He was also a director in the Orange County National Bank of Chelsea, and for several years, until its successful close in 1893, president of the First National Bank, of Chelsea. At the expiration of the charter of this bank the National Bank of Orange County was organized through his efforts, and he was elected its first president. He has nearly completed forty years service as a bank officer. He has bought farm after farm until he is one of the largest landed proprietors of Orange County, and, at an age when other men retire from active business, is continually at work looking after various interests. He [Aaron N. KING] has been an active member of the Republican party since its organization, and represented Tunbridge in the state legislature in 1868 and 1869; was for twenty-five years postmaster, several years town treasurer, and has held other offices in Tunbridge. His [Aaron N. KING's] elder son, Heber A. [KING], was early associated with him in his mercantile business, continuing until his [Heber A. KING's] death, 02 December 1889. The younger son [Millard T. KING], after getting his education at Randolph Academy, entered the store of his father [A. N. KING] and has for a long term of years been the junior member of the firm of A. N. King & Son. He [Millard T. KING], like his father, is an active member of the Republican party, and represented Tunbridge in 1884-1885, and was a senator from Orange County in 1888-1889. Has been treasurer of the town the greater part of the time since 1881. He has been postmaster several years and is a director of the National Bank of Orange County. On 02 December 1841, [Aaron N. KING] was married to [Miss?] Eliza B. NUTTER, of Northfield [Washington County, Vermont]; two sons were the fruit of this union: Heber A. and Millard T. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
