Orange HAYWARD, Henry R. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 188-189 Henry R. HAYWARD, of Tunbridge [Orange County, Vermont], was born 29 March 1841 at Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont], son of Reuben and Maria (CUSHMAN) HAYWARD. Educated in the common schools, and moved in 1854 to Tunbridge, where he has since resided. In 1861 he enlisted in Company E, Second Regiment, Vermont Volunteers, as third sergeant, and served three years; promoted to second lieutenant; honorably discharged at the expiration of his term of service, when he returned to Turnbridge and engaged in the lumber and grist milling business, which he has since followed. Has been commander of Whitney Post No. 21, Grand Army of the Republic, ever since its organization, with the exception of two years; also held various town offices, serving as selectman, lister, overseer of poor, etc., and represented Tunbridge in the Legislature of 1880. On 17 November 1864 he [Henry R. HAYWARD] was married to Miss Susan E., daughter of Mason and Celenda (THOMPSON) FARNHAM, of Tunbridge [Orange County, Vermont]; they have six children, five of whom are living.
