Orange CLEVELAND, James P., Jr. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, pp 74-75 (portrait p 75) James P. CLEVELAND, Jr., was born 21 September 1828 in Bethel [Windsor County, Vermont], son of James P. and Anna P. (HUNTINGTON) CLEVELAND. His father, James P. CLEVELAND, Sr., is still living, at the age of ninety. Very many years ago he joined the Masonic fraternity, of which he is believed to be the oldest living representative in the state of Vermont. James P., Jr. removed to Braintree [Orange County, Vermont] in 1845, and until 1880 followed farming. At that time he removed to West Randolph [Orange County, Vermont] and has devoted himself to life, fire and accident insurance. He has also engaged in settling several estates, and frequently acted as guardian. Enlisting as a private in Company F, Twelfth Regiment Vermont Volunteers, he was elected first lieutenant, and served nine months for the regiment. He was enrolling officer in 1863. On 03 August 1850 Mr. [James P.] CLEVELAND [Jr.] married Martha, daughter of Elijah and Patience (NEFF) FLINT, who died 04 January 1893. They have had three children: Frank H., Jennie A., and Harry L. Mr. CLEVELAND is a member Republican party; has been appointed both deputy and sheriff of his county; was assistant judge in 1878-1879; member of the Legislature in 1876-1877. Was a charter member U. S. Grant Post, No. 96, of West Randolph; has belonged to the Masonic order more thirty years; Worshipful Master four years; treasurer twenty-five years; charter member Randolph Lodge No. 48, Independent Order of Odd Fellows.
