Erfurt; born in Windsor Co., Vt., in November, 1819; the early part of his life was spent in Genesee Co., N.Y., where he was educated; came to Palmyra, Jefferson Co., in 1842; went to California in 1853, and returned in 1856; settled on the farm he now owns of 320 acres in 1857. Married Miss Mary Brown, of Genesee Co., N.Y., April 27, 1841; they have six children – Herman B., Hattie, Alta, Frank, Mary and Ada. Mr. Newton is a Democrat; has been Chairman of the Town Board several terms, and was elected Sheriff of Jefferson Co. in 1877; is liberal in religion. Mr. Newton is one of the successful pioneer farmers, and has just built a fine two-story brick farmhouse in place of the log house of earlier days.
