NEHLS, a merchant tailor and well-known citizen of Kilbourn City [Columbia County], WI, came to this country with no capital except his abilities, and has made his way to success through wisely directed efforts, and he can now look back on the past with satisfaction upon past stuggles. A native of Germany, Mr. NEHLS was born in Freienwalde, Pomerania, 12 Dec 1859, and is a son of Ferdinand and Fredericka (KNAPPE) NEHLS, natives of the same place; the father was born in 1824, and the mother in 1830. There the father died in 1872, but the mother is still living and now makes her home in Milwaukee [Milwaukee County], WI. Our subject attended both public and private schools in his native land, and after coming to this country took up the study of bookkeeping. At the age of 18 he learned the tailor's trade, and at the age of 20 entered the German army, where he served for three years. On 15 Apr 1885, he sailed for America, and landed in this country 13 days later. He first located in Wausau [Marathon County], WI, where he was engaged in the tailoring business until 02 Dec 1890, and then came to Kilbourn City [Columbia County, WI], where he has since successfully carried on operations along the same line. In May 1896 he bought a lot in block No. 47, on Broadway, where he now conducts his business, and where he also carries a good stock of ready made clothing. Mr. NEHLS was married 13 Jan 1891 to Miss Minnie WANDERER, who was born 11 Jan 1866, in Portage [Columbia County], WI, a daughter of Joseph W. and Maggie WANDERER, natives of Germany. Mr. NEHLS belongs to the Catholic church and is highly respected by all who know him. He is a man of exceptional business ability, is strictly honorable in all his dealings, and through his own unaided efforts has achieved success. Contributed by Cathy Kubly
