REV. ERASTUS WOOSTER
SPALDING, S.T.D., Dean of All Saints' Cathedral, the son of Rev. Erastus and
Laura Maria (WOOSTER) SPALDING, was born in Sodus Point, Wayne County, N.Y., on
the Festival of St. Michael and All Angels, September 29, 1834; graduated at Hobart College, Geneva, N.Y.,
in 1855 (from which college in 1877, he received the degree of Doctor of
Divinity); was engaged for some years in teaching; afterwards commenced the
study of law, but ultimately became a candidate for holy orders under Bishop
POTTER of New York, studying theology with Rev. Henry A. NEELEY, D.D., the
present Bishop of Maine, then in charge of Trinity Chapel, New York City; was
ordained to the diaconate in St. Paul's Church, Evansville, Ind., May 17, 1867, by Rt. Rev. Joseph
C. TALBOT, D.D., then Assistant Bishop of Indiana; was ordained to the
priesthood in St. Paul's Church, Milwaukee, Wis., June 10, 1868, by Rt. Rev. Jackson KEMPER, D.D., Bishop of
Wisconsin; was engaged in mission work in Wisconsin (associated for a short
time with educational work at Nashotah Theological Seminary, and afterwards at
Racine College) till called to the present charge, June 1, 1872. He has served as Registrar of the
Diocese and Secretary of the Standing Committee of the same since June, 1873.
