REV. HENRY COLMAN, D.D.,
Presiding Elder of the Milwaukee District of Wisconsin Conference of the
Methodist Episcopal Church, was born in Bridgeport, Addison County, Vermont, on the 14th of May, 1834. His father, Rev. Henry R. COLMAN,
was a member of the Troy Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and came
West, in 1840, as a missionary to the Oneida Indians, near Green Bay,
Wisconsin. The subject of this sketch entered Lawrence University, Appleton, Wis., in 1850, and graduated
in the classical course, in 1857 - the first class graduated by the
University. He was married September 20, 1860, to Miss Lucinda S.
DARLING, a college class-mate. They have three children - Anna L., a
student in Lawrence University; Laura L. and Howard
D., both at home attending public school. After graduating, he was one
year classical tutor at Lawrence University and then in 1858 joined
the Methodist Episcopal Conference. He has been in continuous ministerial
labor to this date, with the exception of four years, 1863 to 1865, when he was
Principal of Evansville Seminary in Rock County, Wis., and his wife was Preceptress of the same institution. Among his appointments
have been Green Bay, Asbury, Milwaukee, Geneva, Wis.; Waukesha, Fort Atkinson and Spring street, Milwaukee. In October,
1879, he was appointed Presiding Elder of the Milwaukee District, and resides
at No. 146 Fifth street, Milwaukee. Since 1873, he
has been Secretary of his Conference; in 1876, he was delegate to the General
Conference; is a Trustee of the Lawrence University. He prepares the
"comments," on the Sunday-school lessons, for the Northwestern Christian Advocate.
Mrs. COLMAN is Conference Secretary of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society;
she is also President of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union. Both are
appreciated workers in social and religious circles.
