WI BIO - Manitowoc Co - ROBERTS, Adam History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol II, pp 531-532 Adam ROBERTS, general blacksmith, wagon and carriage manufacturer, Manitowoc [Manitowoc County, Wisconsin], was born 15 August 1814 in Montford Bridge, County Shropshire [p 531], England. He emigrated to America in 1844, and landed in New York City. On 01 July 1844 he settled in Racine [Racine County, Territory of Wisconsin], where he lived about two years and followed his trade. He moved to Manitowoc [Manitowoc County, Wisconsin Territory] in June 1846. He built a shop and has followed blacksmithing since. He counted the buildings soon after arriving in Manitowoc, and found there were twenty-one, consisting of shanties and dwelling houses. The lighthouse was built in 1836. In 1833 in England he [Adam ROBERTS] was united in marriage to [his first wife] Miss Eliza WORRALL, who was born in England and is now [text published 1881] deceased. They [Adam and Eliza (WORRALL) ROBERTS] had five children, two sons and three daughters. In 1848 in Racine [Racine County, in Wisconsin Territory until 29 May 1848, when the State of Wisconsin was created] he [Adam ROBERTS] was again married, to [his second wife] Mrs. Anna BUTCHER, who was born 27 July 1815 on Isle Ely [Cambridgeshire], England.
