Lamoille PARKER, Charles S. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 298 (portrait p 298) Charles S. PARKER, of Elmore [Lamoille County, Vermont], was born 02 November 1820 in Barre [Washington County, Vermont], son of Henry C. and Mary (BATCHELDER) PARKER. He availed himself of the educational facilities afforded by the common school and academy of the time, and in early life was both teacher and farm laborer, but soon devoted all his attention to the tillage of the soil and has followed this occupation through the course of a long and honorable life. He has now practically retired from active pursuits, but can look back with satisfaction upon his career, contented with the success he has achieved. Mr. PARKER prides himself upon the fact that he was the first to introduce the breeding of Jersey cattle into Lamoille County and he possesses at the present time a fine herd of thirty thoroughbreds. For two years he has been the president of the Lamoille County Agricultural Society, and is a recognized authority in all matters pertaining to the cultivation of the farm or the breeding of stock. From the formation of the party [1854], Mr. PARKER was a Republican, but since 1884 he has identified himself with the Prohibitionists. He has served as sheriff of Lamoille County and was elected associate judge in 1867-1868, county commissioner in 1867, and represented the town of Elmore in 1863-1864. He has also been county bailiff and justice of the peace. He has been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for more than fifty years, and is the oldest living steward of that church in town. He has also been admitted to the Masonic fraternity and is a member of Mt. Vernon Lodge in Morrisville. On 17 October 1842 Judge [Charles S.] PARKER was married to Eliza A., daughter of Seth and Susan (SHERMAN) TOWN. To them have been born five children: Carlos S.; Natt S.; Henry C.; Candace A., wife of Rev. D. B. McKENZIE of Troy [Rennsselaer County], New York; and Ellen F., widow of the late J. H. BATCHELDER of Barre [Washington County, Vermont]. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
