Brattleboro: Transcript Publishing Company, 1894, p 251 (portrait p 251) Henry Moses McFARLAND, of Hyde Park [Lamoille County, Vermont], was born 05 August 1852 in Waterville [Lamoille County, Vermont], son of Moses and Livonia A. (LEACH) McFARLAND. Mr. McFARLAND's great grandfather served in the war of the Revolution, coming out of the service with the rank of major. His father also served his country in the Civil War as captain of Company A, Eighth Regiment Vermont Volunteers, and was a brave and resolute officer, having at various times received honorable mention for meritorious conduct on the field of battle. Henry Moses McFARLAND received his preliminary educational training in the schools of Waterville and the People's Academy, working his way through the University of Vermont, where he graduated as valedictorian in the class of 1878. After his collegiate course he came to Hyde Park, for three years teaching in the academy, and at the same time reading law with Messrs. BRIGHAM & WATERMAN. In 1881 he was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice, being elected three years afterward state's attorney for Lamoille County. In connection with his law practice he has built up an extensive insurance business, his agency being by far the largest office in this section of the state. He served his town for several years as superintendent of public schools; was secretary of civil and military affairs under Governor PAGE in 1890; the first vice president of the Lamoille County Savings Bank and Trust Company; and in 1892 was elected to a similar position in the Lamoille County National Bank of Hyde Park. He has joined both the orders of Free Masons and Odd Fellows; was a charter member of the first Noble Grand of the local organization of the latter institution in Hyde Park, and has received not only the degrees of the Ancient Craft Masonry, but those conferred by Tucker Chapter, as well as being a Knight Templar of Burlington Commandery. On 22 December 1881 Mr. [Henry Moses] McFARLAND was united in marriage to Julia, daughter of Hon. Waldo and Ellen (NOYES) BRIGHAM of Hyde Park [Lamoille County, Vermont]. Was principal of Lamoille Central Academy, Hyde Park, 1878-1881, and trustee for many years; admitted to the Vermont bar 1881; member of firm of Brigham & McFarland, attorneys, three years; secretary and director of Hyde Park Lumber Company since its organization in 1888; director of Lamoille County National Bank since 1888, and its vice president for many years; director and vice president of Lamoille County Savings Bank & Trust Company since its organization in 1889; director of Union Mutual Fire Insurance Company since 1891; director of Burlington Mutual Fire Insurance Company since its organization in 1906; organized the Lamoille County Insurance Agency in 1882, now representing twenty-two leading companies, and has owned and conducted it since. Vice president for Vermont of American Bankers' Association. Republican. States attorney for Lamoille County 1884-1886; secretary civil and military affairs 1890-1892; delegate from Vermont to national Republican anti-saloon convention, Chicago, 1886; chairman board of trustees of village six years, covering organization of village, and installation of [p 255] electric light and sewer systems. Congregationalist; for many years treasurer of society and chairman of business committee. Member Mt. Vernon Lodge No. 8, Free & Accepted Masons; Bliss Lodge No. 44, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; grand master of Grand Lodge of Vermont, I. O. O. F., 1897; grand representative from Vermont to Sovereign Grand Lodge, I. O. O. F., 1898-1899; member of Vermont Society Sons of American Revolution; Delta Psi fraternity and Phi Beta Kappa. In 1881 [Henry Moses McFARLAND] married [Miss?] Julia BRIGHAM of Hyde Park [Lamoille County, Vermont]. They have three children, Helen Marion, Grace Brigham, and Brigham Wheeler.
