Educated at Lamoille Central Academy, Hyde Park. Was employed six years by Western Union Telegraph Company; has followed farming in Vermont; was hotel keeper and liveryman in Kansas [could be Kansas in Bennington County, Vermont, but since the subject was a freighter in Colorado, the author could mean the State of Kansas]; proved up government lands and freighter in Colorado; proprietor of Morrisville and Stowe [both in Lamoille County] stage line six years; at present manager of Morrisville Lumber and Power Company. Democrat; represented Morristown [also in Lamoille County] in the Legislature 1904, the first Democrat elected in Morristown in fifty-four years; has been member of Democratic state committee twelve years; has been lister, school director, and at present is chairman of the board of selectmen of Morristown. Universalist. Member of Mt. Vernon Lodge No. 8, Free & Accepted Masons; Tucker Chapter No. 15, Royal Arch Masons; Coral Chapter, Order of Eastern Star; Lamoille Commandery No. 13, Knights Templar; Mt. Sinai Temple, Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine; and Rathbore Lodge, Knights of Pythias. In 1882 he [Calvin Leo GATES] married [Miss?] Abbie L.
