Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 144 Donly Horace CHAPMAN, business man, Cambridge [Lamoille County, Vermont], was born 19 September 1852 at Fletcher [Franklin County, Vermont], son of Horace and Anna Lovisa (BOYNTON) CHAPMAN. His maternal ancestor, Daniel Lemuel CHAPMAN, was a Revolutionary soldier, served seven years, and was a member of the body guard of General Washington, and by him was offered a commission as colonel; Anna Boynton CHAPMAN was a lady of rare gifts, the genealogy of whose family can be traced to a Norman knight who came over to England with William the Conqueror in 1060. John and William BOYNTON, the first American progenitors, came to Rowley [Essex County], Massachusetts, in 1638, where they settled. Abiel BOYNTON, great grandfather, and six brothers were soldiers in the Revolutionary army, and ranked from colonel to high private. Donly H. CHAPMAN was educated at the common schools and New Hampton Institute In 1885 married Nellie A. HAWLEY of Cambridge, who died in 1901, leaving no children. Taught school the ten succeeding winters following his graduation, also conspicuous in school matters for many years as superintendent and director; held nearly all the elective offices in Fletcher. In 1901 moved from Fletcher to his present home in Cambridge. Vice president, secretary, treasurer, and general superintendent of Queen City Park Association, South Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont], since 1900. Republican; at age of twenty-three was elected constable and collector and several times re-elected; deputy sheriff for twenty years, and justice of the peace twenty years. In religious convictions a Spiritualist; president Vermont State Spiritualist Society; chairman board of management twenty years. Member North Star Lodge No. 12, Free & Accepted Masons; Suadah Temple No. 140, Knights of Korasson; Samaritan Lodge No. 49, Independent Order of Odd Fellows; Antonio Lodge No. 11, Daughters of Rebekah; charter member Lamoille Lodge No. 12, Knights of Pythias; and the Grange.
