Lamoille CAMPBELL, Alfred H. Men of Vermont: Illustrated Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont. Ullery. CAMPBELL, of Johnson [Lamoille County, Vermont], was born 28 September 1850 in Litchfield [Hillsborough County], New Hampshire, son of Smith and Sophia (HILLS) CAMPBELL. Bred on a farm, Mr. CAMPBELL received his early education in the Nashua high school, New London Academy, State Normal School at Bridgewater [Plymouth County], Massachusetts, and Mt. Vernon Academy. He graduated from Dartmouth College with the degree of A. B. in 1877, receiving the degree of A. M. in 1880, and, having completed the post graduate course, that of Ph. D., from the University of Vermont in 1888. After teaching in the public schools and serving as principal of Kingston [Rockingham County, New Hampshire] Academy three years, and associate principal of Cushing Academy, Ashburnham [Worcester County], Massachusetts, five years, he was elected and has been for ten years principal of the State Normal School at Johnson [Lamoille County, Vermont]. An extensive traveler in this country, he has twice visited Europe and devoted much time to the study of school systems of different nations. He has been very successful in his administration of the State Normal School at Johnson. A. member of the Republican party, he has never devoted much time to politics, confining his energies to the educational field. An officer of the America Institute of Instruction, and a member of the National Educational Association, he is now (1893) president of the New England Normal Council, and also president of the Vermont State Teacher's Association. He was appointed by Governor PAGE county examiner of Lamoille County in 1891, and was for years secretary, and now holds the office of president of the Lamoille County Sunday School Association, and is chairman of its executive committee. He is a member of Waterman Lodge, No. 83, Free & Accepted Masons, and serves the lodge as chaplain; a member of the Congregational church in Johnson [Lamoille County, Vermont] and one of its deacons; has been licensed as a minister, and occasionally supplies the pulpit in the vicinity of his home. On 29 November 1877 he Alfred H. CAMPBELL married [first wife] Hattie E., daughter of N. W. WINCHESTER; she [Hattie E. CAMPBELL died] 11 February 1888. Of this marriage were born four children: Arthur W., Hattie Louise, Carrol Alfred, and Alice Cary. In a second union, Dr. Alfred H. CAMPBELL was married, 27 March 1890, to [Miss?] Carrie L. KINGSLEY, of Rutland [Rutland County, Vermont]; she [Carrie L. CAMPBELL] died 16 May 1891. On 20 July 1893 Alfred H. CAMPBELL married [third wife] Marian E., daughter of A. P.
