Porter BUTTS, postmaster, North Hyde Park [Lamoille County, Vermont], was born 23 January 1844 in Stowe [Lamoille County, Vermont], son of Prosper and Mary (LUCE) BUTTS. Educated at Stowe High School. Followed farming five years, hotel keeping twenty-five years; has been postmaster since 1897. Enlisted September 1862 in Company E, Thirteenth Vermont Volunteer Infantry; discharged July 1863; re-enlisted August 1864, Company D, Fifth Vermont Volunteer Infantry; discharged June 1865, by close of war; was in battles of Cedar Creek, Petersburg, and Sailor's Creek. In 1866 he [L. Porter BUTTS] married [Miss?] Lurana A. MUNN of Stowe. Republican; represented Hyde Park in the Legislature, 1896; has held the office of selectman, lister, grand juror, etc.; has been deputy sheriff the last thirty years; member of Waterman Lodge No. 83, Free & Accepted Masons, of Johnson; Tucker Chapter No. 15, Royal Arch Masons, of Morrisville; adjutant and past post commander Aaron Keeler Post No 91, Grand Army of the Republic, of Hyde Park; member of Grange; and Junior Order of United American Mechanics.
