ANDREWS p 7) Biography of John Atwood ANDREWS (father of Sumner ANDREWS) John Atwood ANDREWS, was born at New Boston [Hillsborough County], New Hampshire, son of Asa and Jane (HOGG) ANDREWS. When John was three years of age, his father, who was a farmer, hoping to better his condition, moved to Johnson [Lamoille County, Vermont]. The son received such education as could be obtained in the common schools of that period, and afterward pursued his studies at the Lamoille County [Vermont] grammar school. At the age of twenty-one he purchased a farm situated about half a mile west of the town, where he has ever since resided, and here his father and mother found a home until their death. His estate of 154 acres is one of the best adapted for cultivation in the neighborhood, and is pleasantly located on the Lamoille River, commanding a broad view of mountains, hills and stream. John Atwood ANDREWS was united in marriage 28 March 1844 to Angeline, daughter of Daniel and Lydia Scott (EATON) DAVINSON, of Craftsbury [Orleans County, Vermont]. Four children have been born to them: (1) Sumner A.; (2) Lydia, Mrs. Lyndley FULLINGTON; (3) Abner, who died in infancy; and (4) Wallace Gale, of Montpelier [Washington County, Vermont]. Mr. ANDREWS is a member of the Republican party. In 1882 he was sent to the Legislature, where he served on the educational committee, and he has just completed his fourth year as assistant judge of Lamoille County Court. Judge ANDREWS was a member of the I. O. G. T. [International Order of Good Templars]. Biography of Sumner ANDREWS (son of John Atwood ANDREWS) Sumner A. ANDREWS, of Vergennes [Addison County, Vermont], was born in 28 December 1844 in Johnson [Lamoille County, Vermont]. Mr. ANDREWS received his education at the public schools of his native town and at the Lamoille County grammar school. He remained with his father on the home farm until he enlisted in the army at the age of seventeen. He was a member of Company E, Thirteenth Vermont Volunteers, and was at the battle of Gettysburg. After the war he worked six years in a store; and in 1875 went to the State Primary School, Monson [Hampden County], Massachusetts, as supervisor, remaining there eight years. In 1883 he became a member of the firm of Andrews Brothers, dealers in general merchandise, in his native town, where he remained until 1889 when he was appointed superintendent of the Vermont Reform School. Mr. [Sumner A.] ANDREWS was married 28 September 1868 to Mary A., daughter of Ozias and Charlotte STORY. Mr. ANDREWS is a Republican in politics, and represented Johnson in the Legislature of 1884, serving on the committee of education. In 1888 he was elected assistant judge of Lamoille county court.
