Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 742 George WORTLEY, merchant tailor, Shullsburg, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, was born 30 May 1895 near Grantham, Lincolnshire, England. At about the age of twelve he went to Woolsthorp [Woolsthorpe, Grantham County, Leicestershire, England], near Belvoir Castle [near Grantham], and there commenced to learn the tailoring trade, working there for five years. He then went to Grantham, and there worked at the trade for eleven years. He also worked in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and Leicestershire. In 1850 Mr. WORTLEY came to Shullsburg [Lafayette County], and commenced his present business, which he has since followed except for about two years when he farmed. He owns his shop and residence in town. Mr. WORTLEY has been Town Treasurer and Village Assessor. [George WORTLEY's name appears in the text (p 575) as Assessor for 1876 in a listing of officials for Shullsburg Township.] In 1826 he [George WORTLEY] married [his first wife] Catharine WILKINSON [a maiden name?], who was born in March 1805 in Woolsthorp [Woolsthorpe, Granham County, Leicestershire], England; she died in 1838. [George and Catharine WORTLEY had ten children, four living: (1) Ann, (2) George Jr., (3) Ellinor and (4) Eliza. In 1843 George WORTLEY married [his second wife] Mrs. Mary LINAGER, who was born in 1815 in Lincolnshire, England. They [George and Mary WORTLEY] have three children: (1) David M., who has been for two years a correspondent of the "Galena Industrial;" (2) Rebecca H.; and (3) Mary J. [Note there are two Lafayette County, Wisconsin, biographical sketches for persons named "George WORTLEY."
