La Fayette (WI) SMITH, Henry History of La Fayette County, Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, pp 769-770 Henry SMITH, farmer, Section 30 [Gratiot, Lafayette County, Wisconsin], P. O. Apple River [Illinois], was born 14 August 1831 in Lincolnshire, England. He came to America in 1833, direct to Wisconsin. In 1857 he bought eighty acres; then 135 acres and fifteen acres of timber in Illinois, and 215 acres in Wisconsin, and made the improvements. In religion Mr. SMITH is a Methodist; in politics, a Republican. He has been School Director, Pathmaster, has been on the Board and Side Board, and has been Constable. In 1855 Henry SMITH married [Miss?] Ruth REDFEARN, who was born in September 1836 in Hancock, County, Ohio. They have had twelve children, ten living: (1) Francis, born 15 November 1855; died 03 April 1874; (2) Joseph H., born 07 October 1857, now in Nebraska; (3) Gladwin, born 07 April 1860, now in Nebraska; (4) Mary Eveline, born 14 January 1862, died 03 May 1863; (5) Annie R., born 13 November 1863; (6) George E., born 21 March 1863, now at home; (7) James Erastus, born 12 March 1867; (8) Elizabeth E., born 31 December 1868; (9) William H., born 16 March 1871; (10) Charles Earl, born 4 May 1873; (11) Manly Ansbury, born 07 August 1875; and (12) Albert Nelson, born 24 September 1878.
