Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 728 James SCOTT [Darlington, Darlington Township, Lafayette County, Wisconsin], County Clerk of Lafayette County, was born 21 February 1834 in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. When an infant he came with his parents to Ohio, and grew up and attended school there. He came West to Wisconsin and settled in La Fayette County in 1851. He learned the trade of carpenter and joiner and engaged in building. After the [Civil] War broke out [Civil War officially started April 1861], he enlisted, on 11 August 1862, in Company B, 23rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. After serving one year he was discharged on account of disability. On 13 December 1868 Mr. [James] SCOTT was united in marriage to Miss Louise J. WELTY, who was born at Gettysburg [Adams County], Pennsylvania. They [James and Louise J. (WELTY) SCOTT] have four children: Ada B., Beatrice, Charles D. L., and Maggie May. In 1876 Mr. SCOTT was elected to his present position of County Clerk, and was re-elected in 1878. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
