SAFFORD, Pastor, Congregational Church, Darlington [Darlington Township, Lafayette County, Wisconsin], was born 25 November 1844 in Jo Daviess County, Illinois [which borders on Lafayette County, Wisconsin; the State of Wisconsin was created 29 May 1848.] He grew up and attended school in Illinois, and graduated at the high school in Rockford [Winnebago County, Illinois]. After completing his literary course he entered the Chicago Theological Seminary, where he pursued his theological studies and graduated in 1871. After graduating he engaged in home mission work in Kansas, labored successfully in that field several years, and organized [p 728] several churches. He afterward took an additional course of study, at Andover and New Haven. He accepted a call as acting Pastor of church at St. Johnsbury Center [Caledonia County], Vermont. He returned West and was persuaded to engage in evangelistic work for a short time, and labored with success in this field. He afterward accepted a call as Pastor of the Congregational Church at Prairie du Chien [Crawford County, Wisconsin]. On 04 June 1879 Mr. [Albert W.] SAFFORD was united in marriage to Miss Martha E. FOOTE, who was from Lawrence [Essex County], Massachusetts. Albert W. and Martha E. (FOOTE) SAFFORD have one son, George Chester. Rev. SAFFORD was called to his present pastorate [the Congregational Church in Darlington, Lafayette County, Wisconsin] in February 1880. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
