Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 744 John RUDD, farmer, Section 1, Town of New Diggings, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, P. O. Etna [a post office established in 1857 to supply mail to the lead miners, two and a half miles north of the village of New Diggings], was born 27 March 1839 in Westmoreland, England. When about two years of age he came with his parents to America, and about 1845 they came to La Fayette County. The father of John RUDD died 14 March 1858, aged 43 years. John RUDD, who owns about 111 acres of land, followed mining until about 1856, and since then has been farming. He enlisted in 1862 in Company C, 33rd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged in July 1863 on account of physical disability. John RUDD has been Justice of the Peace, for the past six years has been District School Clerk, has been Chairman of the Town Board, and is Chairman of the Republican Central Committee.
