ROBERTS, farmer, Section 34, Town of White Oak Springs, Lafayette County, Wisconsin, P. O. Scales Mound [Jo Daviess County, Illinois], was born 04 October 1853 in White Oak Springs [Lafayette County, Wisconsin]. His father came here in 1847 [when Lafayette County was still part of the Territory of Wisconsin, the State not formed until 29 May 1848], and [the father, who is not named] died on 10 June 1870, aged 60 years. William H. ROBERTS and his brother [also not named] own the homestead, consisting of 150 acres of land, and their mother [also not named], who was born in 1812, lives with her sons. [James ROBERTS and William H. ROBERTS, on the roster of soldiers from the Town of Kendall in Lafayette County, Wisconsin, were both members of the Twenty-third Wisconsin Infantry, Company Unknown. No mention of a ROBERTS is made in the discussion of the history of Kendall Township. The Methodist Episcopal Church in Belmont, Lafayette County, was organized in 1868, and listed among its founding members is a "James ROBERTS" (p 622), who may or may not be the same James ROBERTS.
