YOUNG, Burr Oak [LaCrosse County], Wisconsin, was born in Saxony, Germany, 27 September 1844, to Sebastian and Elizabeth YOUNG, both natives of Saxony, who were reared, educated, and married there. John L. YOUNG was two and a half years old when the family emigrated to America. [By his birthdate, John L. YOUNG would have been two and a half years of age in 1847.] They sailed from Bremen [Germany] and landed at New York, thence across the lakes to Racine [Racine County], Wisconsin, and from there to Walworth County [Wisconsin], settling near Lake Geneva. In 1853 they came to LaCrosse County [Wisconsin], and here he grew to manhood on a farm, and received both an English and German education. John L. YOUNG has resided in LaCrosse County for thirty-eight years. His father [Sebastian YOUNG] has been a farmer all his life. John L. YOUNG votes with the Democratic party, and is a member of the Lutheran Church. During the [Civil] War, John L. YOUNG enlisted in March 1865 in the 51st Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. His regiment was stationed for a time in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and afterward in various parts of Missouri. John L. YOUNG was honorably discharged on 15 August 1865, and returned to his home in LaCrosse and engaged in farming. He owns a farm of 120 [p 393] acres. On 30 March 1869 Mr. [John L.] YOUNG married Emma Jane PFAFF. She was born in Walworth County, Wisconsin, 03 June 1851, daughter of William and Margaret (BATALYA) PFAFF, natives, respectively, of Germany and Switzerland. Mrs. YOUNG was reared and educated in this country. To John L. and Emma Jane (PFAFF) YOUNG six children have been born [numbers are not intended to represent order of birth], five of whom are living: (1) George C.; (2) Libbie E., wife of Frank ROMMEL, of Burns, LaCrosse County, Wisconsin; (3) Walter A.; (4) William M.; (5) Elwin F.; and (6) Oscar M., who died at age 17 months. The parents are members of the Lutheran Church. Mr. YOUNG is a Republican, member of the Nelson Quygle Post, No. 233, Grand Army of the Republic, of Mindoro [LaCrosse County, Wisconsin].
