WI BIO - Kenosha Co - ZEUS, Albert History of Racine and Kenosha Counties, Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1879, p 702 Albert ZEUS, general merchandise, city of Kenosha, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, was born in Germany in 1845. He came to Wisconsin in 1869, locating at Kenosha, where he worked for E. C. BROWN for one year, and for E. MARTIN eighteen months. Albert ZEUS also clerked for L. BAIN in the hardware business for one year, and for Paul SAUBER six months. On 01April 1876 Albert ZEUS opened a confectionery store on Main Street [renamed Sixth Avenue about 1926], which he continued for one year. In 1877 he removed to North Main, and started a general store at his present location. In July 1873 Albert ZEUS married Miss Christiana MULLER, a native of Germany. She [Christiana (MULLER) ZEUS] died 29 Nov 1874 at Kenosha [Kenosha County, Wisconsin]. Albert ZEUS married again, on 27 April 1876, to Miss Heurine AUGENENDT, a native of Germany. Albert and Heurine (AUGENENDT) ZEUS have had two children, one boy and one girl. Albert ZEUS is a member of the Catholic Church, and politically is a Democrat. [One possibility for the church membership of Albert ZEUS would be St. George's Catholic Church, organized 17 July 1851, which began as a small frame church at the corner of Chicago and Orange Streets (renamed 8th Avenue and 48th Street about 1926). This church and its school were destroyed by fire 12 January 1875 and rebuilt the same year. If Albert and Christiana (MULLER) ZEUS were married in St. George's church, they were likely married by the pastor who was there in 1873, Rev. Michael BEITLER.] [A second possibility for the church to which Albert ZEUS belonged would be the "Old St. Mark's" church. This congregation united as a body on 06 February 1834, and the church, at Ann and Wisconsin Streets (renamed 11th Avenue and 58th Street), was consecrated in 1846. The pastor of the Old St. Mark's church in 1876, Rev. William B. DOUGHERTY, died in January 1876. Thus if Albert and Christiana (MULLER) ZEUS were wed at the old St. Mark's church, they would have likely been married by Father DOUGHERTY's successor, Rev. Father James CASEY. St. Mark's Catholic church was not renamed St. James until 1883. Thus Albert ZEUS may have been married at what is now St. James Catholic Church, but at that time was known as St. Mark's. A new St. Mark's Church was erected a mile or two further south in the city of Kenosha, and both St. Mark's and St. James (aka Old St. Mark's) are still in existence. St. James Cemetery, located several blocks south and a bit east of St. James church, adjoins Green Ridge Cemetery, which was originally known as the Kenosha City Cemetery.] [Other Catholic churches existing near Kenosha in 1876, when Albert ZEUS was married, are: St. Patrick's Church in Bristol, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, built in 1846, but now defunct; and St. Alphonso's Catholic Church, in Wheatland, Kenosha County. The distance to both of these churches from the city of Kenosha, however, makes them less likely choices for researchers seeking the church of membership of persons who were residents of the city of Kenosha in the late 1800's.
