Chicago: Western Historical, 1879, p 712 Mathias SCHWAN, farmer, Section 9, Somers Township, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, P. O. Kenosha, was born in 1822 in Germany. He came to America in 1846, stopping at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He remained there for two years, came to Kenosha County [then still part of Racine County] in 1848, and engaged in farming. [Wisconsin became a state on 29 May 1848. Kenosha County was created from a portion of Racine County on 26 January 1850.] In 1856 he located on the farm he now occupies. In 1848 in Milwaukee he [Mathias SCHWAN] married Miss Gertrude FOX, who was born in Prussia. They [Mathias and Gertrude (FOX) SCHWAN] have four children: Christ, Annie, Hubert, and Helen.
