Clarke Publishing, 1916, v 2, pp 127-128 Herman SCHONSCHECK, now residing in Salem [Salem Township, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, for many years identified with the ice cutting business, but not actively engaged in any business undertaking now, was born 30 May 1853 in Germany, a son of Fred and Henrietta SCHONSCHECK, both of whom have now passed away. Fred SCHONSCHECK died in 1891, and Henrietta in 1900. In the family of Fred and Henrietta SCHONSCHECK were the following children: (1) Herman, who was drowned in Germany at the age of three years; (2) Johana, the wife of John DECKERT, who is engaged in the brewery business in Germany; (3) Edward, now in charge of a tax office in Germany; (4) Henrietta, who is living on the old homestead farm in Germany; (5) Adolph, who is engaged in farming at Bristol, Kenosha County, Wisconsin; (6) Herman [the second of that name], the subject of this biography; and (7) Mary, the wife of Gus SHIELKE, who conducts a small farm at Antioch, Lake County, Illinois. Herman SCHONSCHECK obtained his education in Germany, attending school to the age of fifteen years, after which he concentrated his efforts upon assisting his parents on the farm, being thus employed until he crossed the Atlantic to America in 1881. Making his way at once to Wisconsin, he hired out as a farm hand and was thus engaged for about eight years. [In a statement moved to this paragraph by the submitter, Herman SCHONSCHECK is said to have come to Kenosha County in August 1883.] He afterward secured employment at the ice house and for twenty-five years was connected with the business of cutting ice until he sustained injuries on the 01 January 1916 which necessitated his retirement from that work. On 18 March 1889 at Bristol [Kenosha County, Wisconsin], Mr. [Herman] SCHONSCHECK was married to Miss Anna FOX, a daughter of John and Katherine (BAUER) FOX, who are residing in Pleasant Prairie Township [Kenosha County]. They are pioneer settlers of Kenosha County, having arrived about 1869. The father [John FOX] worked by day until he could save from his earnings enough money to enable him to purchase the land which he still owns. Their family [the family of John and Katherine (BAUER) FOX] numbered fifteen children: (1) Kate, the wife of Charles JARNIGO, a railroad man living in Salem [Kenosha County]; (2) [Katherine] Mrs. SCHONSCHECK; (3) Mary, the wife of William SMITH, a member of the police force of Kenosha; (4) Andrew, a carpenter residing at Riverbank [Stanislaus County], California; (5) Frederick, a section boss at Salem, Wisconsin; (6) John, who died in infancy; (7) John, the second of that name, living in Kenosha; (8) Herman, an engineer who makes his home in Antioch [Lake County, Illinois]; (9) Charles, residing at Pleasant Prairie [Kenosha County]; (10) Nellie, the wife of Herman SZYZMONEK, a decorator in Chicago [Cook County, Illinois]; (11) Bert, who is engaged in farming at Ilwaco [Pacific County], Washington; (12) Frances, who became the wife of Peter JANSEN, a farmer of Lake Forest, Wisconsin [Lake Forest in Lake County, Illinois], and died 26 December 1914, her remains being laid to rest in Pikeville [Bristol Township, Kenosha County], Wisconsin; (13) William, who died in infancy; and (14) Margaret, who also died in infancy. To Mr. and Mrs. SCHONSCHECK [to Herman and Anna (FOX) SCHONSCHECK] have been born seven children: (1) Harry, residing [p 128] in Salem [Salem Township, Kenosha County, Wisconsin; in delayed and affidavit births for Kenosha County, Wisconsin, is a Harry Otto Herman SCHONSCHECK, born 14 June 1888; unknown to submitter if this is the same Harry]; (2) Mattie, who is living in Milwaukee [Milwaukee County]; (3) Edith, the wife of Gordon ACKLEY, a contractor of Walworth [Walworth County], Wisconsin; (4) Freddy, at home [delayed and affidavit births for Kenosha County has a Frederick Adolph SCHONSCHECK, born 18 May 1892; unknown to submitter if the same person]; (5) Emery; (6) Arthur; and (7) Florence, the last three named also at home. [The only other SCHONSCHECK in delayed and affidavit births for Kenosha County, which includes those prior to 01 October 1907, is a Roy Gustav SCHONSCHECK, born 08 December 1871; his relationship to this family, if any, is unknown to submitter.] Mr. and Mrs. SCHONSCHECK are members of the Methodist church and loyal to its teachings. In his political views Mr. SCHONSCHECK is a Republican, but not an aspirant for office. Fraternally he is connected with the Modern Woodmen of America, while his wife is a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. His life has been one of untiring industry, and whatever success he has achieved is attributable entirely to his perseverance and earnest effort.
