WI BIO - Kenosha Co - ROCKWELL, Charles L. History of Kenosha and Kenosha County, Wisconsin. Lyman. Chicago: Clarke Publishing, 1916, vol II, pp 235-236 Charles L. ROCKWELL, city of Kenosha, Kenosha County, Wisconsin, of the firm of Rockwell & Heigl, engaged in electrical construction work and contracting, was born 20 April 1878 in Walworth County, Wisconsin, a son of Maurice Eugene and Charlotte (EASTICK) ROCKWELL. Maurice Eugene ROCKWELL was born at Fort Atkinson [Jefferson County], Wisconsin, and Charlotte EASTICK was born in Canada. They were married in Walworth County, Wisconsin, and removed to Kenosha [p 236] County when their son, Charles L., was a little lad of six years, settling on Pleasant Prairie. Charles L. ROCKWELL pursued his education in District School No. 1 of Pleasant Prairie Township, and remained at home until eighteen years of age, assisting his father in the cultivation and improvement of the old homestead farm. He thus became familiar with all the duties and labors incident to the development of the fields and leaned the value of industry and determination in business affairs. Thinking, however, to find other pursuits more congenial than the work of the farm, he left home and entered the employ of the Kenosha Hosiery Company, in which connection he worked his way steadily upward by reason of his capability and trustworthiness, and for fourteen years occupied a position as Foreman in their factory. Four years ago [text published 1916, thus about 1912], in connection with J. R. McCUTCHAN, he [Charles L. ROCKWELL] organized the Rockwell & McCutchan Electrical Construction Company. They conducted business under that style until September 1915, when Mr. McCUTCHAN sold out to F. A. HEIGL and the firm of Rockwell & Heigl was formed. They do electrical construction work and contracting, and are accorded a liberal and well deserved patronage. They have their office and show rooms at Nos. 905-907 Elizabeth street [renamed 63rd Street about 1926], and since starting out in this line they have met with gratifying success. In 1900 Mr. [Charles L.] ROCKWELL married Miss Rose Elizabeth GETHEN, and they have two children: (1) Beulah Irene, thirteen years of age; and (2) Willis Arnold, a year old. The parents [Charles L. and Rose Elizabeth (GETHEN) ROCKWELL] are members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. [Charles L.] ROCKWELL is connected with the Modern Woodmen of America, and with the Sons of Veterans, his father [Maurice Eugene ROCKWELL] having been a soldier of the Civil War. He [Charles L. ROCKWELL] takes a commendable interest in public affairs, and his fellow citizens, recognizing his worth and ability, have called upon him to serve as Alderman of the Fourth Ward, to which position he was elected for a second term in 1916. His life is an expression of high principles and laudable ambition, and gradually in his business career he is working his way upward, having already gained a creditable place in industrial circles of the city.
