READ, deceased, [who was a resident of the city of Kenosha, Kenosha County, Wisconsin], was born 26 July 1831 in New York State. He came to Wisconsin at an early day [if before 29 May 1848, still the Territory of Wisconsin, the State created on that date], locating at Kenosha [the city of Kenosha until 07 February 1850 called Southport; part of Racine County until Kenosha County was formed 26 January 1850], where he followed the business of sailing. He was the owner of three vessels and commanded them until within two years of his death. In 1867 he [George W. READ] married Miss Jennie READ [related?], a native of Jefferson County New York. They [George W. and Jennie (READ) READ had] two boys [between 1867 and 1879, when the text was published]: (1) Fred, aged eleven years; and (2) Harry, six years of age.
