WI BIO - Juneau Co - WILCOX, John History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol I, p 388 John WILCOX, car repairer, Elroy [Juneau County, Wisconsin], was born in England in 1849. He emigrated to the United States in 1863, and came direct to Wisconsin, settling first at LaValle, Sauk County, where he was engaged in farming for about eight years, at the end of which time he came to Elroy [Juneau County], and has since been engaged in repairing cars on the West Wisconsin Division [the West Wisconsin Railroad prior to 1880] of the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha Railway [began in 1880; controlled by the Chicago & Northwestern Railway two years later]. On 01 February 1874, he [John WILCOX] was married to Miss M. E. SPRAGUE, a native of New York State, born in 1855. They [John and M. E. (SPRAGUE) WILCOX] have one child, Ida, born 10 January 1876. Mr. WILCOX is a Liberal in politics, and a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and the Ancient Order of United Workmen. [Mr. WILCOX may have belonged to an organization such as the Brotherhood of Railroad Carmen. There would not be any railroad employee records for Mr. WILCOX, however, as they were not kept that early. Most employee railroad records are for 1936 and afterward, and Mr. WILCOX, if he was living, would have been over eighty years of age in 1936.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly
