WI BIO - Jackson Co - ROSS, William C. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol I, p 418 Rev. William C. ROSS was born 15 March 1824 in Glasgow, Scotland. His father came with his family to the United States in 1832 and settled at Whiteston, Oneida County, New York. Here our subject [William C. ROSS] received a common and high school education. He came West soon after he was licensed to preach, and commenced preaching in Columbia County, Wisconsin, having joined the Wisconsin Conference, and afterward connected with the West Wisconsin Conference. On 19 January 1848 he [Rev. William C. ROSS] was married to Miss Sarah L. GILLETT, of Troy [County], New York. They [Rev. William C. and Sarah L. (GILLETT) ROSS] have three children living: Lettie Agnes, Elma L., and Edwin L. Their son, Nathan C., enlisted first in the 39th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers, and afterwards in the 48th. He [Nathan C. ROSS] died since the war closed, at the age of twenty-four years. [The Civil War ended in April 1865.] "Elder" ROSS [William C. ROSS] spent some time "at the front" caring for the sick and wounded; also at the Soldier's Home in Milwaukee [Milwaukee County, Wisconsin], all at his own expense. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
