Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, p 364 George WHITNEY, jeweler, barber, restaurant, ventriloquist, magician, lecturer on spiritual manifestations (exposing the tricks of the Davenport brothers, Slade and others), of Darford [Dartford, Green Lake County, Wisconsin; on Green Lake], was born 02 April 1835 in Springfield, Coos County, New Hampshire, son of Samuel B. and Deborah (MANSEL) WHITNEY. Samuel B. was a Baptist minister, and preached from his eighteenth year up to the time of his death, at forty-five years of age. Deborah is still living, in Iowa, aged eighty-seven years. [Text published in 1881, thus Deborah (MANSEL) WHITNEY was born about 1794.] Mr. [George] WHITNEY came to Wisconsin in 1850, and settled in Waushara County, and two years later moved to Mayville, Dodge County, then to Marquette and Kingston, and engaged in lumbering. On 22 September 1855 he [George WHITNEY] married Josephine HALVENSTOT [a maiden name?], of Kingston [Green Lake County, Wisconsin], who died at Marquette [Green Lake County, Wisconsin] in 1863, leaving two children: one who died young, and Charles E., who was born 22 April 1857, is single and living at Marquette [Green Lake County]. Mr. [George] WHITNEY transferred his business interests for a short time to Iowa, and in [George WHITNEY] 1864 married Jane PARKER, of Marquette [Green Lake County, Wisconsin], by whom he has two children: Ellah, born 22 July 1869; and Clarence, born 28 April 1873. Mr. [George] WHITNEY formerly traveled with Professors ANDERSON and SAND, and is an expert in the various professions mentioned. He is a Liberal Republican and temperance man. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
