WI BIO - Green Co - ROOT, James History of Green County, Wisconsin. Springfield IL: Union, 1884, p 732 James ROOT, a prominent farmer of the town of Brooklyn [in the northeast corner of Green County, Wisconsin], was born 27 April 1841 in Herkimer County, New York, son of Francis and Permelia (SPAULDING) ROOT, with whom he came to Wisconsin. Francis ROOT, with his wife and two children, and Powell SHELL, settled in the Town of Brooklyn [Green County, Territory of Wisconsin] in 1847, Francis ROOT on Section 20 and Powell SHELL on Section 29, each of them entering forty acres. [Wisconsin became a State 29 May 1848.] They [Franics ROOT and Powell SHELL] dug a well and erected their cabins near the section line [the line between Sections 20 and 29 of Brooklyn Township]. Mr. [Francis] ROOT died in 1848 [the same year the State of Wisconsin was formed from land in Wisconsin Territory], leaving two children: James, the subject; and Harriet. Mrs. ROOT [Permelia (SPAULDING) ROOT] subsequently was married to John McCLARRINON, and by this union gave birth to seven children. She [Permelia McCLARRINON] died in 1871. In 1861 he James ROOT was married to [Miss] Barbara LOZAR, daughter of George LOZAR. They [James and Barbara (LOZAR) ROOT] have four children: Fred, Plinney, Homer, and Ida. On 05 February 1865 he [James ROOT] enlisted in Company I, 46th Wisconsin, and served until mustered out. [The Civil War officially ended in April 1865.] James ROOT now owns the land entered by his father [Francis ROOT] and Mr. [Powell] SHELL. Farming has been James ROOT's occupation, and he now [1884] has 186 acres, with good improvements. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
