WI BIO - Green Co LUCHSINGER, Christian, Fredrick & Thomas History of Green County, Wisconsin. Springfield, IL: Union, 1884, pp 1041-1042 Biography of Christian LUCHSINGER - p 1041 (father of Thomas) Christian LUCHSINGER was born 20 August 1820 Canton Glarus, Switzerland. In his youth he worked in cotton factories, but at the age of sixteen years was apprenticed to the watchmaker's trade. He followed this work for seven years, and then was made village Clerk. He was in that position until 1852, in which year he came to the U. S. and to this town [New Glarus] with two of his children, Thomas [whose biography follows] and Elizabeth. The following year [1853] he sent for his wife and the other son, Samuel. On 24 May 1881 at Austin [Mower County], Minnesota, Samuel [LUCHSINGER] was accidentally killed while in discharge of his duty as yard master in the employ of the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul Railway [a large railroad which connected the cities of Chicago, Minneapolis, Omaha, and Kansas City. An old issue of an Austin newspaper may have an item about his death, e. g., the "Austin Register," first issued in 1871.] In 1854 he [Christian LUCHSINGER] left New Glarus [Green County, Wisconsin, Mineral Point [Iowa County, Wisconsin], where he worked in the mines, zinc smelting, etc., a portion of the time, and at clock repairing a portion of the time. In 1864 he [Christian LUCHSINGER] enlisted in the 142nd Illinois Volunteers, 100-day service, and served nearly six months. The regiment was discharged and he enlisted again in the 50th Wisconsin Volunteers and served fifteen months. He was mustered out with the regiment and returned to New Glarus, where he bought a home upon which he now resides. In 1842 in Switzerland, Mr. [Christian] LUCHSINGER was married to Margaret [Margaretha?] WILD. Five children have been born in America [to Christian and Margaret (WILD) LUCHSINGER]: (1) John, born in 1856; (2) Susan, wife of Charles SHEPLE, of Dayton [Exeter Township, Green County, Wisconsin, ], born in 1858; (3) Margaret, born in 1860; (4) Mary, born in 1863; and (5) Sophie, born in 1867. Christian Luchsinger has served as Clerk of this town ten years, and when not in this position has been almost continuously acting as Justice of the Peace. He is one of the prominent public men of the town. Genial and kindly in his intercourse with others, he has hosts of friends. [The 1880 Census of New Glarus, Green County, Wisconsin (p 189 A) contains what appears to be the family of Christian LUCHSINGER. Christian's age is given as sixty years, which agrees with the birthdate given in the biography. His occupation is laborer, and he was born in Switzerland to parents who also born there. Christian's wife is shown as born in Switzerland, about 1822, by calculation from her given age of fifty-eight years. The parents of Christian’s wife were born in Switzerland. Assuming this is the correct Christian and Margaretha LUCHSINGER, the only children left residing in the household in 1880 were John and Sophia, whose given ages, twenty-three and thirteen, also agree with the years of birth given in the biography. Also living in the household in 1880 were a daughter-in-law of Christian (probably John's wife), Katharina, aged twenty-one, born in Wisconsin about 1859, to parents who were born in Switzerland, and a granddaughter of Christian (probably a daughter of John), Margaretha, aged one year, thus born about 1879, to parents who were born in Wisconsin, probably John and wife Katharina. Submitter, who is not researching LUCHSINGER, did not track this family backward in the census to see when Susan, Margaret, and Mary (the siblings of John missing in the 1880 Census) each disappear from the household. Submitter did not seek a marriage record for Susan LUCHSINGER (perhaps spelled "LUCKSINGER") and Charles SHEPLE (perhaps spelled "SHEPPLE" or "SHEPLI"), and did not search for census records for them.] Biography of Thomas LUCHSINGER - p 1042 (son of Christian) Thomas LUCHSINGER was born 05 April 1844 in Canton Glarus, Switzerland, son of Christian LUCHSINGER, and came to New Glarus [Green County, Wisconsin] with his father in 1852. He grew to manhood here, and making the best use of his limited advantages, acquired a good education, which with a mind by nature studious and a retentive memory have made him a well-informed and useful citizen. In February 1864 he [Thomas LUCHSINGER] enlisted in Company H, Thirty-fifth Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and served credibly until the regiment was mustered out of service. He came home an Orderly Sergeant. After the war, in 1868, he [Thomas LUCHSINGER] was married to Salome HOSELY [HOESLY or HOSELI?], daughter of Mathias [Mattheus?] HOSELY, one of the first colonists [of New Glarus, Wisconsin]. Salome HOSELY was born about 1850 in Wisconsin. Both of her parents are living [1884]. After returning from the army, Mr. [Thomas] LUCHSINGER learned the trade of wagon maker, which he followed until 1882, when he moved to Dayton [Exeter Township, Green County, Wisconsin] and bought the store and stock of William GREEN. He continued in business there until the spring of 1884, when he closed out his stock and returned to New Glarus. Mr. and Mrs. LUCHSINGER [Thomas and Salome (HOESLY) LUCHSINGER] have had five children. The first, (1) Margaret, died at the age of one year. The living are: (2) Christian [born about 1870]; (3) Barbara [born about 1872]; (4) Margaret [Margaretha in the 1880 New Glarus census; born about 1874]; and (5) Salome [the youngest, born about 1877]. Mr. LUCHSINGER is well and favorable known throughout Green County. He has been the candidate of his party [Democratic] for the Legislature, and also for important county offices. That party being the minority party, he has received a flattering vote, but has never been elected. [Mathias and Barbara HOESLY are listed in the 1880 census for New Glarus (p 182 D). "Mattheus" is listed as sixty-four years of age, thus born about 1816, in Switzerland, his parents also born there. What was the maiden name of Mrs. Mattheus HOSELY? Is Barbara, the wife of Mattheus in this census, aged 61 years, and thus born about 1819, the mother of Salome (HOESLY) LUCHSINGER? She was also born in Switzerland, as were her parents.] Biography of Fredrick LUCHSINGER - p 1041 Fred LUCHSINGER [who was 37 years of age when this biography was published] was born 14 March 1847 in Philadelphia [Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania [son of John and Barbara LUCHSINGER, both deceased]. In 1856 his parents settled in New Glarus [New Glarus Township, Green County, Wisconsin], buying land on Section 1, which is now included in the fine farm of 196 acres owned by the subject [Fred LUCHSINGER]. The children of John and Barbara LUCHSINGER are: (1) John [born about 1840 in Switzerland], the present County Treasurer of Green County [Wisconsin]; (2) Barbara [born about 1842 in Switzerland], wife of Jacob BURGY [BURGI?], of Washington [i. e., Washington Township, Green County, Wisconsin]; (3) Catharine [Katharina, born in New York about 1846], wife of Mathias STUESSY; and (4) Fred [the subject of this biography, born in Pennsylvania]. [John LUCHSINGER (older brother of Fredrick), farmer, a resident of Monroe Township, Green County, Wisconsin in 1880, was born about 1840 in Switzerland. John married Elizabeth (maiden name?), who was born in Switzerland about 1847. Her parents were also born in Switzerland. Seven children are listed in the household of John and Elizabeth LUCHSINGER in the 1880 census of Monroe (page 155 C), all of whom were born in Switzerland: (1) John, born about 1869; (2) Henry, born about 1871; (3) Samuel, born about 1872; (4) Thomas W., born about 1873; (5) Ella, born about 1875; (6) Barbara, born about 1877; and (7) Frank, born about 1879.] [Barbara LUCHSINGER (older sister of Fredrick) was born about 1842 in Switzerland. She married Jacob BURGI (spelled "BURGY" in the 1880 census) who was born in Switzerland on 15 January 1837; and died in Monroe, Green County, Wisconsin, on 12 February 1895. They were probably married during or before 1865, since the oldest child living with them in the 1880 census of Washington Township, Green County, Wisconsin (page 224 D) is fifteen years of age. All the children of Jacob and Barbara (LUCHSINGER) BURGI were born in Switzerland, and those in the 1880 census include: (1) Julia, born about 1866; (2) Amelia, born about 1867; (3) Jacob, born about 1870; Louisa, born about 1872; Catherine, born about 1874; and Olive, born about 1877.] [Katharina LUCHSINGER (also an older sister of Fredrick) was born about 1846 in New York, and married Mathias STUESSY, a farmer, who was born in Switzerland. Four children, all born in Wisconsin, are listed with Mathias and Katharina (LUCHSINGER) STUESSY in the 1880 Census of New Glarus (p 189 A): (1) Emilie, born about 1867; (2) John, born about 1870; (3) Mathias (Jr.), born about 1872; and (4) Katharina, born about 1875.] On 28 November 1869 Fred [Fredrick] LUCHSINGER was married to Magdalena DURST [DUERST?], a daughter of John Henry DURST [DUERST?], who came from Switzerland and settled in New Glarus [Township] in 1847. He [John Henry DURST] now lives in the village [of New Glarus]. Mr. and Mrs. LUCHSINGER [Fredrick and Magdalena (DUERST) LUCHSINGER] have eight children: [approximate years of birth calculated from ages given on page 183 B in the 1880 Census of New Glarus] (1) Barbara [b 1870?]; (2) John [ b 1872?]; (3) Fred [Fredrick; b 1874?]; (4) Robert [b 1876?]; (5) Maggie [Magdalena; b 1878?]; (6) Catherine [Katharina; b 1879?]; (7) Mary [born after the 1880 census]; and (8) a little girl not yet christened [also born after the 1880 census]. The father of Mr. [Fred] LUCHSINGER [namely John LUCHSINGER] died in 1862, and his mother [Barbara LUCHSINGER] in 1868. Fred LUCHSINGER is a popular and respected citizen, and one of the prominent men of New Glarus. He has filled offices of trust. [The surname is spelled "LUCHSINGER" in the 1880 census, but appears as "LUCKSINGER" in some Green County records. The relationship between Christian and Fredrick LUCHSINGER, although implied, is unclear from these texts. Perhaps Christian is Fredrick's uncle? George WILD, a boarder in Fredrick LUCHSINGER's household in 1880, may be related to the wife of Christian LUCHSINGER, whose maiden name was WILD. Feedback from LUCHSINGER researchers to help clarify dates of birth of children and address unanswered questions raised by these texts is welcomed and much appreciated. The submitter's goals are to assist researchers by combining and presenting together as many related biographies as possible, and to provide evidence, whenever possible, for the facts presented in them.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly 1880 Cen New Glarus, Green Co, Wisconsin p 189 A Christian LUCHSINGER - 60, laborer, b Swit [20 August 1820], Swit, Swit [subject, 1st bio] Margaretha LUCHSINGER - 58, wife, keeps house, b Swit [1822?], Swit, Swit John LUCHSINGER - 23, son, laborer, b WI [1857?], Swit, Swit Katharina LUCHSINGER - 21, dau-in-law, at home, b WI [1859?], Swit, Swit Margaretha LUCHSINGER - 1, grdau, b WI [1879?], WI, WI Sophia LUCHSINGER - 13, dau, at home, b WI [1867?], Swit, Swit 1880 Census New Glarus, Green Co, WI, p 190 C Thomas LUCHSINGER - 36, wagon maker, b SWITZ [1844?], Swit, Swit [subject, 2nd bio] Salome LUCHSINGER - 30, wife, keeps house, b WI [1850?], Swit, Swit Christian LUCHSINGER - 10, son, attends school, b WI [1870?], Swit, WI Barbara LUCHSINGER - 8, dau, b WI [1872?], Swit, WI Margaretha LUCHSINGER - 6, dau, b WI [1884?], Swit, WI Salome LUCHSINGER - 3, dau, b WI [1877?], Swit, WI 1880 Census New Glarus, Green Co, WI, p 182 D Mattheus HOESLY - 64, retired farmer, b Swit [1816?], Swit, Swit [father-in-law of Thomas] Barbara HOESLY - 61, wife, keeps house, b Swith [1819?, Swit, Swit [her maiden name?] 1880 Census New Glarus, Green Co, WI, p 183 B Fredrick LUCHSINGER - 33, farmer, b PA [14 March 1847], Swit, Swit [subject, 3rd bio] Magdalena [nee DURST] LUCHSINGER - 28, wife, keeps house, b WI [1852?], Swit, Swit Barbara LUCHSINGER - 10, dau, at home, b WI [1870?], PA, WI John LUCHSINGER - 8, son, b WI [1872?], PA, WI Fredrick LUCHSINGER - 6, son, b WI [1874?], PA, WI Robert LUCHSINGER - 4, son, b WI [1876?], PA, WI Magdalena LUCHSINGER - 2, dau, b WI [1978?], PA, WI Katharina LUCHSINGER - 1, dau, b WI [1879?], PA, WI Barbara STUESSY - 15, other, servant, b WI, Swit, NY George WILD - 33, other, farm laborer, b Swit [1847?], Swit, Swit [related to Christian's wife?] 1880 Census of Washington, Green Co, WI, p 224 D Jacob BURGY - 43, farmer, b Swit [15 January 1837], Swit, Swit Barbara BURGY - 38, wife, keeps house, b Swit [1842?], Swit, Swit [sister of Fredrick] Julia BURGY - 15, dau, single, b WI [1866?], Swit, Swit Amelia BURGY - 13, dau, b WI [1867?], Swit, Swit Jacob BURGY - 10, son, b WI [1870?], Swit, Swit Louisa BURGY - 8, dau, b WI [1872?], Swit, Swit Catherine BURGY - 6, dau, b WI [1874?], Swit, Swit Olive BURGY - 3, dau, b WI [1877?], Swit, Swit 1880 Census, Monroe, Green Co, WI, p 155 C John LUCHSINGER - 40, farmer, b Swit [1840?], Swit, Swit [brother of Fredrick] Elizabeth LUCHSINGER - 33, wife, keeps house, b Swit [1847?], Swit, Swit John LUCHSINGER - 11, son, at school, b WI [1869?], Swit, Swit Henry LUCHSINGER - 9, son, at school, b WI [1871?], Swit, Swit Samuel LUCHSINGER - 8, son, at school, b WI [1872?], Swit, Swit Thos.
