HOLMES, high sheriff and farmer, St. Albans [Franklin County, Vermont], was born 11 November 1860 at Highgate [Franklin County, Vermont], son of Loren and Mary Jane (HEMPHILL) HOLMES. Educated in the public schools. Left home at the age of sixteen years. Began lumbering and farming at the age of twenty-one years. In 1880 he purchased a farm in Highgate; in 1886 went to Manchester [Hillsborough County], New Hampshire, in the employ of the Amoskeag Corporation; in 1893 returned to Highgate and went into the meat business with A. P. BURWICK, continuing for five years, adding a general store; later dissolved the partnership and continued the business for seven years, when he sold out; for two years was superintendent of the Sheldon Poor House Association. Republican; was constable and collector at Highgate for six years, overseer of the poor for fifteen years, postmaster for six years, deputy sheriff for many years, and has been high sheriff of Franklin County since 1906. Member of Seventy-six Lodge No. 14, Free & Accepted Masons; Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Swanton; and the Modern Woodmen of America, Highgate. In 1880 he [George C. HOLMES] married [Miss?] Eliza BUTTON of Swanton [Franklin County, Vermont]; she [Eliza HOLMES] died in 1885; in 1899 Mr. [George C.] HOLMES married [Miss?] Grace PELTON of Highgate [Franklin County, Vermont], they have one daughter, Katharyne.
