Educated in the public schools. On 13 August 1864 at Cambridge [Lamoille County, Vermont] he enlisted in Company B, First Vermont Cavalry, participating in engagements at the Opequan, Front Royal, Tom's Brook, Cedar Creek, Middle Road, Waynesboro, Five Forks, Namozine Church, and Appomattox Station; discharged from service at Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont], 21 June 1865. Democrat; deputy collector of U. S. customs since 01 December 1895. Episcopalian. Member Franklin Lodge No. 4, Free & Accepted Masons, and Champlain Chapter, Royal Arch Masons. He [Charles Henry COTA] married [Miss?] Martha Ann SOMERS, of Burlington [Chittenden County, Vermont]; they have two children: William J., of Burlington; and Anna Bell of New York City.
