CHASE, lawyer, East Fairfield [Franklin County, Vermont], was born 02 May 1861 at Bristol [Fillmore County], Minnesota, son of Thaddeus P. and Nancy K. (BROWN) CHASE. Educated in the public schools of Fletcher [Franklin County, Vermont], and Brigham Academy. Taught school in Fairfield, Fletcher, and Fairfax [all in Franklin County, Vermont]. Studied law with Captain George W. BURLESON of Fairfield; admitted to Vermont Bar 1886, to U. S. district court 1904; states attorney Franklin County 1894-1896; owns what is known as Interval Farm at East Fletcher, a farm of six hundred acres. Republican; while reading law served as deputy county clerk, register of probate, justice of the peace, and deputy sheriff; deputy collector and inspector U. S. customs at Newport [Orleans County, Vermont] 1889-1892, and resigned to pursue his profession; chairman of school board, Fairfield, eight years; appointed postmaster 21 March 1899; while holding the office secured three rural free delivery routes, and in many ways improved the service; resigned 27 February 1908. Attendant of the Congregational Church. Past master Eagle Lodge Free & Accepted Masons; member of Champlain Chapter and Lafayette Commandery of St. Albans, and served as district deputy grand master Seventh Masonic district; member of Modern Woodmen of America, Camp No. 10,426.
