BURLESON, lawyer, East Fairfield [Franklin County, Vermont], was born 23 March 1845 at West Berkshire [Franklin County, Vermont], son of Caleb N. and Amanda (BOWDISH) BURLESON. Educated at Franklin Academy, and St. Mary's College; studied law with Fitch & Newton, Highgate [Franklin County]; admitted to Vermont Bar of County and Supreme Courts 1867; U. S. Circuit and District Courts 1877; member of firm of Ballard & Burleson twenty years. He [George W. BURLESON] enlisted in the First Regiment, Vermont Volunteer Infantry, 08 May 1861; served a three-month enlistment; re-enlisted 15 October 1861 in the Sixth Vermont Volunteer Infantry; mustered into service the same day; served continuously until the close of the war; was at different times private, sergeant, quartermaster sergeant, first lieutenant, and captain; was wounded three times during the war. This regiment was part of the Second Brigade of the Second Division of the well-known Sixth Corps of the Army of the Potomac. In 1865 he [George W. BURLESON] married [Miss?] Irene E. SPAULDING, of Franklin [Franklin County, Vermont]; they have three children: Emma I. Hill, Eugene H. and George S. [Submitter assumes "Hill" is not Emma's married surname; middle initial of Eugene may also be "Hill."] Democrat; was states attorney Franklin County, 1864; deputy collector and inspector U. S. customs in charge of subport of St. Albans, 01 March 1886 to 01 January 1903; then appointed special deputy in the office of the collector for the district of Vermont at Burlington; now holding that position. In religious belief an Episcopalian. Member of Grand Army of the Republic; Loyal Legion; past master Eagle Lodge No. 67, Free & Accepted Masons, of East Fairfield; past high priest Champlain Chapter No. 1, Royal Arch Masons, St. Albans; past thrice illustrious master Columbus Council No. 1, Royal & Select Masons, St. Albans; 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason.
