FEHLANDT, Carl & H. F. W. Biographical Review of Dane County, WI. Chicago: Biographical Review Pub. Co. 1893, Vol II, pp 416 & 425 Biography of Carl FEHLANDT (p 416) - father of H. F. W. Carl FEHLANDT, of Mazo Manie [Mazomanie, Dane County, WI] was born in Mecklenburg, Germany, 25 Feb 1825, a son of John and Mary (SCHULDT) FEHLANDT, both born and reared in Picher, Germany. John FEHLANDT was a farmer by occupation. They reared a family of three children, our subject and two sisters: Sophia, who died in Germany; and Mary, who died after coming to this country. Carl FEHLANDT received but little education, as his parents were very poor. After reaching a suitable age he obtained a tract of wild land in some remote section of Germany, which he improved and sold for $5,500. A part of this money he used for the betterment of his parents, and with the remainder he came to the U. S., in 1865. He settled in Roxbury Township, Dane County, WI, which he has since made his home. Mr. FEHLANDT purchased two farms of 160 acres each, where he followed farming until the spring of the present year [1893], and then sold one place and came to Mazo Manie [Mazomanie]. Here he purchased a neat little cottage and prepared to spend the remainder of his days in peace and rest. He is a Democrat in his political views, believing protective tariff to be injurious to the producer and a great burden to the consumer of manufactured articles. He has been honored with the offices of Supervisor and Assessor in his township, having held the former position three terms. Carl FEHLANDT was married in Germany at the age of 25 years, to Mary NIEBUHR. They have had eight children: (1) Carl, editor of the Port Washington Zeitung, the only German newspaper published in Ozaukee County, WI; (2) William, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Dane County and owner of a fine farm in Berry Township, Dane County, WI; (3) John, who has just completed a journey over the greater part of the Western States, is a practicing attorney of Madison, Dane County, WI; (4) August, a graduate of both the WI University and Princeton College of Princeton, NJ, is now attending Yale College; (5) Henry, for seven years principal of the high school of Oshkosh, Winnebago County, WI, has traveled extensively in Europe, and is now superintendent of public schools of Ozaukee County, WI; (6) Mary, wife of Robert VOSS, a farmer of Dane County; (7) Lewis, deceased at the age of 21 years; and (8) Sophia, wife of Henry KIRCH, a miller by occupation. Carl FEHLANDT is a lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. He has made the education of his sons the sole object of his later days, and their present prominence bespeaks to the public success he has attained in this direction. Biography of H. F. W. FEHLANDT (p 416) - son of Carl Hon. H. F. W. FEHLANDT is one of the prominent public men of Dane County, WI, who in 1888 was the representative of the county in the Assembly, and in 1890 was elected to his present office of Circuit Clerk. He was born in Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany, 20 Dec 1851, and was the son of Carl FEHLANDT. He was educated in the public and also in private schools of a country noted for the attention given to education [Germany]. In 1865 he came with his parents to this country and with them came immediately to Dane County, WI, and made settlement. Here all of the family became successful farmers, because they were all of such industrious and persevering habits that they could not help but succeed. When H. F. W. FEHLANDT first entered public life it was predicted of him that he would make his mark and the prediction seems likely to be realized. Although he was reared upon a farm, he had ambitions above the toilsome life of the agriculturalist, and his talents were recognized, and in 1888 he was honored by his fellow citizens with an election to the WI State Legislature. While there he was a member of the Committee on Expenditures, and Manufactures and Industries. So well did he satisfy the citizens of Dane County that in 1890 he was elected to the office of Circuit Clerk, and re-elected in 1892, the circuit including [in 1893] the WI counties of Dane, Columbia, Sauk, Juneau, Adams, and Marquette. H. F. W. FEHLANDT had been elected from Berry Township, Dane County, WI, where he had lived for some years. He was elected Township Supervisor of his township in 1880, and held the office for 11 years, and extended through the time he was in the Assembly and some of the time since his election to his present office. For the last eight years he has been Chairman of the Board. He still holds his fine property near Mazo Manie [Mazomanie]. H. F. W. FEHLANDT was married in Berry Township, Dane County, WI, to Miss Frederica REESE, who was born and reared in that township. She is a lady of many accomplishments, and has proven an excellent wife and mother. She is the daughter of Hans REESE, a native of Holstein, Germany, a soldier in the Holstein-Schleswick war of 1848, and who in 1855 emigrated to the U. S. and settled upon a farm in Dane County, WI. Mr. and Mrs. REESE now live in Mazo Manie [Mazomanie], and are quite old. H. F. W. and Frederica (REESE) FEHLANDT are the parents of the following living children: Flora E., Elsie S., William L., and Lillie. Another child, Linda, was taken away by death when little. Mr. FEHLANDT is a member of the Democratic party and prominent in its ranks. He and his family belong to the Lutheran Church. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
