LABARGE, DAVID, has achieved success in life by hard labor, which he still continues, although he has reached the age of seventy-one years. His parents, Francis and Katherine (Quarie) Labarge, lived and died in Canada. They had five children, two boys and three girls. David worked in a sawmill at Fond du Lac, Wis., in 1856, and then took up logging on the river and resided at Stillwater, Minn., for fifteen years. To eight acres of land at Burkhardt, purchased in 1873, he quickly added 152 more. Later he bought 160 acres at East Grand Forks, Polk County, Minn. His farm land has been well improved and cultivated. Aside from general farming, he raises Short Horn cattle and Poland China hogs. In 1857 he married Katherine Johnson. By this union he has eight children: Alice, Lucy, Lizzie, wife of Will Harrison, of Duluth; Edward and Earnest, Minnesota farmers; Frank and Pullin, North Dakota farmers, and Harry, who lives at home. Mr. Labarge owns a large house and takes much interest in the affairs of the county and its early history. During the years he has been in the valley he has watched its wonderful growth and has seen to it that the improvements on his property have kept pace with those of his neighbors. The family are communicants of the Catholic church.

edandliz@blueyonder.co.uk Elizabeth is compiling a One Name Study of the Lockin(g) Family and would be very happy to correspond with anyone interested in the family.

LOCKIN, JOHN was born on 24 Jun 1822 in Fiskerton, Lincolnshire, England. His early life was described in his obituary " He had but little opportunity to acquire an education for at the age of eight years he began working as a farm hand, receiving only 14 pence per day, from which sum he paid his board. At the age of 14 he hired out by the year for $15 and his board, his wages increasing as he grew older. During the last two years spent as an employee, he had charge of all the laborers of the place." He was baptized on 30 Jun 1822 in Fiskerton, John, son of John "Lockey" and Mary. He immigrated in 1842 to New York State, USA. His obituary states " of an economical disposition, Mr. Lockin saved his money until he had acquired a considerable sum, when he determined to try his lot in the New World, sailing for New York City. At length he reached his destination and for three years during the summer months worked as a farm hand in the Empire State, while during the winter he attended school. In 1845 he went to Jefferson County, Wisconsin, where he entered a quarter section of land and engaged in farming for four years, when he sold for $1,200 and came to Fond du Lac county, locating in Metomen township. By industry and perseverance he has increased his property until he is now one of the well-to-do citizens of Brandon. He owns 420 acres of fine arable land besides some town property." He appeared on the census in 1850 in Dwelling 1329, Metomen, Fond Du Lac, a 28-year-old farmer of $1,000, living with his wife and two small children. This was the year he acquired 40 more acres of land, with a federal patent of 10 Aug 1850, granting him 40 acres in section 25 of Metomen. According to his own account, he had moved to Metomen in 1849, which is borne out by his non-appearance on a local census of 1847. He appeared on the census in 1860 in Dwelling 222, Metomen, as John "Lochin" Jr, a 37-year-old farmer of $4,000 real estate and $1,158 personal estate, living with his wife and 6 children. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Brandon, a 57-year-old farmer, living with his wife and two daughters. This part of Metomen had been recently named Brandon. “The 1880 History states that Brandon was organized as a village on January 8 and indicates, "The first Trustees were J. Abercrombie, W. D. Ash, J. Lockin, L. Marsh, G. H. Paine, and J. Raube."

On 15 May 1883, John purchased another 160 acres of land to add to his holdings. He died on 5 Aug 1891 in Brandon. His obituary concluded " An upright honest man, a loyal useful citizen, a devoted generous father, a true and consistent Christian, he shall indeed be missed. The funeral services were held in the M. E. Church of Brandon. conducted by the Pastor assisted by the Revs  J. V. Trenery, A. Porter, and G. M. Heckendorf: Attended by a large concourse, during the services. "Mark the perfect man and behold the upright for the end of that man is peace"

John's gt grandson wrote " I have been to Brandon twice. 20 years ago [c 1985] we talked to the man who now owns the farm John Jr lived on. The original house was still there at that time and was located right next to the cemetery where a lot of the family is buried. When we revisited Brandon [in 2003] the house had been replaced. There is a Lockin Street in Brandon named after John Jr and in the Methodist church are two beautiful stained glass windows with the names inscribed on the bottom, John Lockin and Mrs. John Lockin." In 1880, his life was described thus:

"JOHN LOCKIN, early pioneer in Metomen; was born in Fiskerton, Lincolnshire, England, on the 24th of June, 1822; came to Cherry Valley, Otsego Co., N. Y., in 1842, where he remained three years, when he removed to Watertown, Jefferson, Co., Wis., and took up a quarter-section of Government land; in 1849, be located in Metomen, Wis.; has continued a resident of this township to present date; his home, for the last ten years, has been in Brandon. He owns several town lots, and a farm of 141 acres adjoining corporation limits; he has held several local offices. On the 30th of June, 1845, he was married to Miss Mary Jane Gragg, of Cherry Valley, N. Y; they have had eight children--William H., born l846, died in 1875; Mary Ann, born 1849; Charles H., 1851; Joseph C., 1853; Emily J., 1856; Hattie E., 1859, died 1862; Ella R., born 1861; Angie, 1865. Two married sons are living in Iowa; two married daughters are living in this county, and the two youngest daughters are at home; he and his wife are prominent Methodists. He was one of the sturdy pioneers whose lives have aided in giving Wisconsin an honored name. His family is all consistent members of the church, with their parents; he is a radical Republican. Blest with a competency and surrounded with friends, he and his worthy wife are enjoying the fruits of a well-spent life. ("The History of Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin, Chicago: Western Historical Company, 1880)"
