Fond du Lac History - Submitted by Jeannette Rapley Sauntry

FREEMAN, MARY (See also Parks) was previously married probably in Fond du Lac, WI at the age of 14 to Nathaniel Parks born in England.  They had three daughters, the first two are: Emma E. born about 1849 and Martha born abt 1852.  Mr Parks felt the lure for the California gold fields and left his family to seek his fortune.  A report came back that Mr. Parks had been killed by Indians.  Mary then married Charles Rapley.  After the death of Charles Rapley, Mary and her 4 children are found in the 1860 census town of Friendship, Fond du Lac county living with her parents, Dennis & Mary Freeman.

Rumours of Mr. Parks death were unfounded as he reappeared on the scene and he and Mary had a third daughter, Mary Lenora Parks born abt 1862.   Mary was widowed once again when Mr Parks fell into the well and drowned abt 1865 in Fond du Lac, WI.

Mary and the five children lived in Houston, MN and Minneapolis, MN, before settling in Cameron, WI.  in late 1880.  Family folk lore has Mary next marrying Mr. Truex after 1865 and she had two boys with him.  By 1871, Mr Truex and their two boys had died.  Her next marriage was to Mr Porter about 1871 and he died by 1880 as she is found in the 1880 Hennepin census listed as a widow and living with her son George Rapley.

On November 28, 1880, Mary J. Porter (nee Freeman) was married to John B. Shipman in Barron, WI.  John Shipman, born abt 1827 in Ohio , died January 8, 1899 Cameron, WI. and was the owner of the general store in Cameron.   Mary lived out her days in Cameron, Wisconsin.

The daughters of Mary Freeman and Nathaniel Parks, Emma and Martha, are found in the 1861 Friendship, Fond Du Lac, WI census living with their mother Mary and half brothers Charles and George.  The third daughter Mary is found with her husband in Sumner, WI in the 1880 census
