Essex GROUT, Jonathan Vermont Historical Magazine, No. XI, October 1867, p 1002 (extracted from a section on the history of Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont) Jonathan GROUT and Edward BUCKNAM, Esq. were among the twelve first settlers [of Guildhall, Essex County, Vermont], but at precisely what time they came into town is not known. Mr. GROUT appears to have been a man of some note, although we have been unable to learn very much of him. We learn, by some of the records, that there arose a "dispute" between him and the proprietors, but what the cause or nature of the contention might have been, we do not learn. Mr. BUCKNAM was one of a committee appointed to survey the town into lots, and he and Thomas DARLING performed that important service in 1787. There are probably no descendants of either of these men [Edward BUCKNAM or Thomas DARLING] residing in this town [Guildhall] at this time. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
