Burlington: Ullery Publishing Company, 1912, p 139 Scott Clifton CARBEE, portrait painter, Boston [Suffolk County], Massachusetts, was born 26 April 1860 in East Concord [Essex County, Vermont], son of James Balch and Mary (GRAY) CARBEE. Educated at Boston public schools; studied art in Boston, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; Paris, France; and Florence, Italy. His first instruction in drawing was with Prof. George H. BARTLETT, while attending public school in South Boston; after graduating was employed as lithographer; studied painting under Hugo BREUL, of Providence, Bouguereau, Ferrier and Delecluse in Paris, and later in Etaples, France, and in Florence under Max BOHM; has exhibited in Paris Salon and all principal American exhibitions. Among portraits painted are Chief Justice Horace GRAY; ex-U. S. Senator ROACH of Nevada; Ex-Governors PROUTY and ORMSBEE and Chief Justice John W. ROWELL of Vermont; Judge BAKER, of Hallowell [Kennebec County], Maine; Mrs. William K. RYAN and children of New York; and the late Colonel Albert CLARKE of Boston. Member of Vermont Association of Boston; Boston Art Club; Society of Odd Brushes; and Copley Society of Boston. Residence at 110 Tremont Street, Boston, Massachusetts; studio [same address].
