WILLIAMS, Sr., Eau Claire, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, was born 09 June 1824 in Bannington, Genesee County, New York, and came to [the Territory of] Wisconsin October 1844, locating at Lake Mills, Jefferson County. Two years later he went to Mayville, Dodge County, and engaged in farming. In 1853 he went to Portland, Dodge County, and was in mercantile business there until 1856, when he went to Little Dells, seven miles above Kilbourn City. [Kilbourn extinct; now Wisconsin Dells, Columbia County.] He was in the lumber trade there until February 1863, when he came to Eau Claire and kept a flour and feed store for a year, and was proprietor of a livery stable for eight years. In 1869 he built the Windsor House, renting it until 1873-1874, when he sold out. Selling out his livery establishment in the winter of 1872-1873, he built a mill at Alma [Buffalo County]. After operating that for three seasons, he sold out and traveled until the spring of 1880. Since then he has resided in Eau Claire. He was appointed Deputy Sheriff and Jailer in January 1881, and has charge of the county buildings as janitor. He held various offices in other counties before coming to Eau Claire. On 08 February 1845 he [George W. WILLIAMS] was married at Lake Mills [Jefferson County, Wisconsin] to Malinda STREETER [a maiden name?], who was born in St. Lawrence County, New York. They [George W. and Malinda WILLIAMS] have five children living: (1) James H., Postmaster at Vale, Chippewa County [Wisconsin]; (2) Thomas E., principal of schools in Augusta [Eau Claire County, Wisconsin]; (3) George W., Jr., bookkeeper for Stephen MARSTON in Eau Claire; (4) Ella, and (5) William F. Biography of George W. WILLIAMS, Jr. George W. WILLIAMS, Jr., who was bookkeeper at Stephen MARSTON's mill, Eau Claire [Eau Claire County, Wisconsin], was born 07 June 1851 in Williamstown [Dodge County, Wisconsin]. He came to Eau Claire in 1863. George W. WILLIAMS, Jr. was employed by his father, in livery business, and afterward in furniture. He commenced furniture business on his own account in 1875. He carried it on for two years, then engaged for some years in handling a patent right for ditching. He has been engaged in present capacity since March 1881. On 31 May 1873 he [George W. WILLIAMS, Jr.] was married in Ottawa [La Salle County], Illinois, to Hattie A. BANGS [a maiden name?]. They [George W. and Hattie A. WILLIAMS, Jr.] have lost three children. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
