WI BIO - Eau Claire Co - ROWELL, A. J. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol I, p 338 A. J. ROWELL, farmer, Town of Union, Eau Claire County, Wisconsin, was born in 1832 in Vermont. He enlisted at Genesco [typo for Geneseo, Livingston County, New York?] in 1862 in the 104th New York Regiment, at Genesco, and was in the battles of Rappahaunock, Silver Spring, second Bull Run, Chantilla and Antietam. He was wounded in the back of the neck, the ball passing just in front of the spine. A. J. ROWELL was discharged on Surgeon General EASTMAN's certificate in 1863. He came to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, in 1864. Mr. ROWELL was employed in Daniel SHAW's machine shop for one year, and in Badger Mills until 1875. [The author could mean that Mr. ROWELL worked in Badger Mills, Lafayette Township, Chippewa County, Wisconsin, a community located on the Chippewa River, not far north of the line between Lafayette Township, Chippewa County, and Seymour Township, Eau Claire County. The author could more specifically mean that Mr. ROWELl worked at the Badger Mills lumber mill, operated later called "Badger Mills," operated for a time by John BARRON of Eau Claire, then sold to the Badger State Lumber Company and operated by them until at least 1890. The Badger Mills was located at what is now Lake Hallie, adjoining Chippewa Falls in Chippewa County.] In 1872 A. J. ROWELL married [Miss?] Anna VAN DRESER. They [A. J. and Anna ROWELL] have three children: Minnie, Fletcher, and Maud. Mr. ROWELL was at French Falls [Trempealeau County?] from 1875 to 1878, and came on his farm [in Union Township, Eau Claire County] in 1878. [Union Township is in the northwestern corner of Eau Claire County. The City of Eau Claire is east of Union Township and extends somewhat into that township (1878 map of Eau Claire County). In its journey through southern Union Township, the Chippewa River forms, in some places, the border between Union and Brunswick Township, adjacent to and south of Union, and the river, halfway in its journey across southern Union Township, dips down into Sections 3 and 4 of Brunswick Township. Both the Chippewa River and the West Wisconsin Railway line run through the city of Eau Claire. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
