Wheeler ROBBINS, Washington Township [Eau Claire County, Wisconsin], was born 24 February 1821 in the town of Lenox, Madison County, New York, and at the age of five moved with his parents to Lee, Oneida County, New York. In 1845 he came to Fond du Lac [Fond du Lac County, Territory of Wisconsin], and a year later [1846] to Green Lake [then in Marquette District; Green Lake County, Wisconsin, created in 1858]. In 1854 he located on Section 27, Township 27, Range 90, in Washington Township [then in Chippewa County, but in Eau Claire County since that county's creation in 1856], where he has since engaged in farming. In 1877 he became [p 345] interested in the Eau Claire Woolen Mill, which is located on Section 27, in the Town of Washington. [A woolen mill is shown on Otter Creek in Section 27 of Seymour Township on the map of Eau Claire County in the 1878 Atlas of Wisconsin.] It is a one-set mill, doing mostly custom work, that manufactures cassimeres, flannels and yarns, and employs ten men, this mill chiefly supplying the home market. In January 1846 in the town of Sugar Grove, Warren County, Pennsylvania, he [E. Wheeler ROBBINS] was married to Laura POND [a maiden name?], who was born in Oneida County, New York. They [E. Wheeler and Laura ROBBINS] have two children: (1) Hubbard T.; and (2) Martha E., now Mrs. Stoddard FIELD, of Osseo, Trempealeau County [Wisconsin]. E. Wheeler ROBBINS was a member of the first Town Board in his town, serving several years in that capacity. He was Assessor in the town of Eau Claire one term, and in the town of Washington for two years. He was Side Supervisor several times, and Superintendent of the County Poor for three years, in the early days of the county. The first deed recorded in the county was made to Mr. ROBBINS, and recorded by him. He is a member of the Ancient Free & Accepted Masons, and of the Good Templars. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
