RILEY, farmer [Eau Claire County, Wisconsin], was born in 1838 in Canada West, and came to [the Territory of] Wisconsin with his parents in 1846. [Wisconsin became a State 29 May 1848.] They settled in Milwaukee [Milwaukee County, Wisconsin], where his father died. George W. RILEY moved to Eau Claire in 1856 [the same year Eau Claire County was created from part of Chippewa County], pre-empted a piece of land, which he lost, and then bought a farm. In August 1861 George W. RILEY enlisted in Company C, Eighth Wisconsin, and served until 1863. He re-enlisted in the veterans [Veteran Reserve Corps] and served in that organization. Mr. RILEY was wounded and disabled for three months. [The Civil War officially ended in April 1865.] In March 1866 in Eau Claire [Eau Claire County, Wisconsin] he [George W. RILEY] was married to [Miss?] Mary E. OWENS. They [George W. and Mary E. RILEY] had four children, of which three survive: Estelle M., Imogene M., and Percy E. Mr. RILEY is a member of the Temple of Honor. He was Chairman of the Town Board several terms, and also held school offices. Submitted by Cathy Kubly
