WI BIO - Dunn Co - SCHUTTE, William History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, Vol 1, p 287 William SCHUTTE, of the firm of Schutte & Quilling, general merchants, bankers and grain dealers, Menomonie [Menomonie Township, Dunn County, Wisconsin], was born in January 1841 in Prussia, Germany. He came to this county [Dunn] with his parents when about twelve years of age [by calculation, about 1853]. The family had settled in the State of Illinois, but came to Wisconsin in 1855. Mr. SCHUTTE has been a resident of Dunn County since that time. He was for several years engaged in business in Menomonie with Mr. Fred URSINUS, but sold his interest to his partner in 1873 and formed a partnership with Mr. QUILLING. William SCHUTTE was married to [Miss?] Mary REINEKE, a native of Germany. William and Mary SCHUTTE have two children, William and Ida, and have lost two children. [The 1870 Census of Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin, shows the parents of all of the people listed below as foreign-born, and all of these persons resided in the same household. Comparing the biography to this census indicates that three of the four children of William and Mary SCHUTTE were: (1) William, born about 1873, living in 1881; (2) Charles, born about 1865, possibly one of the two deceased by 1881, and (3) Ida, living in 1881, and likely born between 15 June 1870 and 1881, since her name does not appear in the census.] [The 1870 census also spells "URSINUS" as "IRSINUS," and assuming the Fred of the census was the partner of William SHUTTE, one wonders how being connected in business and also living together affected the partnership, which the biography indicates was dissolved about three years after the census. One also wonders if Minnie IRSINUS is a daughter of the Fred IRSINUS of the census, or perhaps a second wife, since the census includes that he was married twenty-one years. Perhaps the Fred IRSINUS of the census had a son, also named Fred, who was deceased by 15 June 1870 and thus not enumerated, who was the wife of Mary, making Christina and William IRSINUS the grandchildren of the Fred in the census. Checking earlier and later censuses may help eliminate some of the possibilities presented by the 1870 census.] [A clarification of "Menomonee" and "Menomonie" is also included here by the submitter. The Township of Menomonee ("onee") was established in 1857. The Village of Menomonie ("onie") was platted in Menomonee ("onee") Township in 1859. To decrease some of the spelling confusion, the name of the township was changed from Menomonee ("onee") to Menomonie ("onie") in the 1880's. There is no county in Wisconsin spelled with the "onee" or the "onie." Instead, in 1961, lands formerly in the Menominee ("inee") Indian Reservation became Menominee ("inee") County, which is thankfully not adjacent to Menominee ("inee") County, Michigan, separated from Wisconsin by the Menominee ("inee") River...] Submitted by Cathy Kubly - - - - - 1870 Census Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin (parents of all are were foreign born; all reside in same dwelling) SHUTTE, William, 29, grocer; $25,000 real estate; $1,500 personal property, born Prussia SHUTTE, Mary, 27, keeps house, born Prussia [about 1843; married about 1861?, about age 20 when William born] SHUTTE, William, age 7, attends school, born WI SHUTTE, Charles, age 5, attends school, born WI IRSINUS, Fred, age 41, grocer & liquor; $3,500 real estate; $1,000 personal property, born Saxony, married 21 yrs IRSINUS, Minnie, age 25, keeps house, born Prussia [daughter of Fred? 2nd wife?] IRSINUS, Christina, age 4, WI IRSINUS, William, age 2, WI ====
