WI BIO - Door Co - SCHAEFER [SHAFER], Philip A. History of Northern Wisconsin. Chicago: Western Historical, 1881, vol 1, p 263 Philip A. SCHAEFER [SHAFER?], farmer, Section 2 [Sturgeon Bay, Nasewaupee Township, Door County, Wisconsin], P. O. Sawyer [Nasewaupee Township], was born 16 July 1831 in Germany. He came to America in 1852 and worked at farming in New Jersey, moving thence to Washington County, Wisconsin. In 1856 he removed to Sturgeon Bay and located on Section 2, Town 27, Range 25, Town of Nasewaupee, where he has since resided. He owns about 540 acres of land, and has eighty-five acres under cultivation. [His assets in the 1870 census of Nasewaupee Township, Door County, Wisconsin, are $1,000 in real estate and $800 in personal property.] Mr. SCHAEFER has held the offices of Town Clerk five years, Treasurer four years, Assessor and other town offices. In 1855 Philip A. SCHAEFER was married to Miss Elizabeth WALTER, of Germany. Philip A. and Elizabeth (WALTER) SCHAEFER have four daughters and two sons. (1) Mary, died in 1857 at the age of ten months. (2) Edward died in January 1868, aged four months. (3) John died in the fall of 1878, aged nine years and two months. [Note that the living children are not named. Having four living daughters, two living sons, one deceased daughter, and two deceased sons totals nine children.] [The 1870 Census of Nasewaupee Township, Door County, Wisconsin has Philip SHAFER (different spelling), age 39, born Hesse-Darmstadt; his wife, Elizabeth, age forty, born Hesse-Darmstadt; and another Christina SHAFER, aged sixty-nine, born Hesse-Darmstadt, who is likely his mother. Combining the information from the biography and the census, the children were: (1) Mary, who died 1857, probably born in Wisconsin; (2) Christina, born about 1858 in Wisconsin; (3) Edward, born about November 1859, probably in Wisconsin, who died in January 1868; (4) Anna, born about 1866 in Wisconsin; (5) Madelena, born about 1862 in Wisconsin; (6) Philip C., born about 1864 in Wisconsin; (7) William, born about 1866 in Wisconsin; and (8) John, born about 1868, who died in the fall of 1878, aged nine years and two months. Thus there is one living daughter not accounted for (just Christina, Anna, and Madelena), if there are four living as the biography states. Is there a married daughter not living with the family?] [Additionally, the family of Philip SHAFER, in the 1870 census, included farm laborers William BUSKY and John GETTLEMAN. Submitter found no other BUSKY residing in Door County in 1870. John GETTLEMAN may be related to Andrew and Catherine GETTLEMAN, both 41, listed in the 1870 Nasewaupee Township census, with children: Catherine 13, John 10, Henry 8, and Charles 5.] Submitted by Cathy Kubly - - - - - 1870 Census of Nasewaupee Township, Door County, Wisconsin: SHAFER, Philip, age 39, born [about 1831] Hesse-Darmstad [Germany], can't read/write SHAFER, Elizabeth, age 40, keeps house, born [about 1830] Hesse-Darmstad, can't r/w SHAFER, Christina, age 69, born [about 1801] Hesse-Darmstad, can't r/w [mother of Philip?] (Mary, deceased, would probably fit here - born about 1857) SHAFER, Christina, age 12, born [about 1858] WI, attends school, can't r/w (Edward, deceased, would probably fit here - born about Nov 1859) SHAFER, Anna, age 10, born [about 1860] WI, attends school, can't r/w SHAFER, Madelena, age 8, born [about 1862] WI, attends school SHAFER, Philip C., age 6, attends school, born [about 1864] WI SHAFER, William, age 4, at home, born [about 1866] WI SHAFER, John, 2, born [about 1868] WI BUSKY, William, age 25, farm laborer, born Prussia, can't r/w GETTLEMAN, John, age 26, farmer, born Hesse Darmstad, cant r/w =====
