From Memorial and Genealogical Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin, publ. 1894 - Page 198-201 HENRY HOWELL THOMAS. Among the enterprising, thorough and successful farmers of Dodge County, Wis., Henry Howell THOMAS is eminently worthy of mention, for he owns and operates an excellent farm of 265 acres. He was born in the section in which he now resides October 4, 1857, to David G. and Martha (MORRIS) THOMAS, the former of whom was born in the northern part of Wales, and came to the New World when a lad of ten years. He grew to manhood in Racine County, Wis., but was left an orphan by the death of his mother when eleven years of age, his father having died when he was three years old. Thus thrown upon his own resources at an early day, he became inured to hardships, and received little or no educational advantages. In 1855 he came to Dodge County and began working at his trade of carpenter and joiner in Fox Lake, and here he was married June 9, 1856, his wife being the sister of John W. MORRIS, whose sketch appears in this work for two years after his marriage he followed his trade, then bought 200 acres of land, on which he located and engaged in tilling. Being thrifty and pushing, he was afterward enabled to purchase more land and erected thereon a substantial brick residence, a commodious and well built barn and other necessary farm buildings. He was a Democrat in politics, but was never a political aspirant, preferring to devote his attention to the conduct of his farm. He was called from life November 12, 1893, at the age of fifty-nine years, but is survived by his widow, who resides on the old homestead with her son, Henry Howell, while her other son, Griffith D., is engaged in merchandising in Columbus Junction, Iowa. Henry Howell THOMAS has spent the greater part of his life on the farm on which he is now living, and being brought up to its management under the able direction of his father, he could not fail of success. Not only was he given the advantages of the common schools in his youth, but these advantages were supplemented by one year in Fox Lake College, where he made fair progress in his studies. He was married in Green Lake County, Wis., September 20, 1882, to Miss Margaret WILLIAMS, who was born, reared and educated there, a daughter of William R. WILLIAMS, a native of Wales, and a pioneer of that county. After his marriage Mr. THOMAS farmed in Green Lake County for about ten years, then returned to the old home farm in 1891, and has since very successfully managed the place. His habits of life are good, he has excellent principles, and he and his family move in the best social circles of their section, and their home has always been noted for its hospitality. He and his wife have two children: Kittie and David. He and his wife are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and are among its most earnest workers. Submitted by Carol
