From Memorial and Genealogical Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin, publ. 1894 - Page 185-186 MARTIN R. STAPLETON. Tilling the soil has always been a profitable way of acquiring a competence, and one of the most worthy followers of this calling in Dodge County is Martin R. STAPLETON, who has resided here since 1849, and is the owner of a fine farm of 260 acres in Trenton Township. He was born in County Tipperary, Ireland, November 11, 1826, and while growing up was given good educational advantages. In 1849 he decided to seek his fortune in America, embarked at Liverpool, and was eight weeks on the Atlantic Ocean. He was for a short time in South America, then stopped for a short time at Mobile and New Orleans, then came up the Mississippi River and canal to Chicago, and about the 1st of May went from Chicago to Milwaukee, thence through the woods to Dodge County. About 1841 he bought 160 acres of wild land. He located on this land in 1854 and began clearing and improving, and a few years later purchased another tract adjoining. On his place Mr. STAPLETON built a substantial frame house, but has since added to and remodeled it and now has a large and substantial residence, good barns, granaries, etc. The place is located about six miles from Waupun and four miles from Fox Lake, and is an exceptionally valuable and desirable piece of property. Mr. STAPLETON has always been a Democrat politically, his first presidential vote being cast for Franklin Pierce and for every Democratic nominee since that time. He was united in marriage in Washington County, in April 1852, to Miss Catherine BOHAN, a native of Ireland, who died in September 1893, having become the mother of five sons and three daughters: James, who has charge of the home place; Anna, wife of Charles BLESSING, of Grand Forks, S.D.; Michael, a business man of Fox Lake; John, of Seattle, Wash.; Edmond, at home; Mary; and Emma, wife of George WILLIAM, a druggist of St. Paul; and Albert M., who is a successful teacher of Dodge County. The family are members of the Catholic Church, and are upright and worthy people, a benefit to any section in which they might choose to locate. They have made many friends in Dodge County, and are highly esteemed. Submitted by Carol
