From Memorial and Genealogical Record of Dodge and Jefferson Counties, Wisconsin, publ. 1894 - Page 145-146 JOHN C. SHERMAN. This gentleman owns an excellent farm of 179 acres in Burnett Township, Dodge County, Wis. He was born on the farm on which he now lives March 19, 1853, a son of Hon. John M. and Louisa C. (COMSTOCK) SHERMAN, both natives of the State of New York. The father, when a young man, came West and bought the farm in Dodge County, Wis., on which his son is now living. In Walworth County, this State, he was married to Miss COMSTOCK, who had removed to this State with her parents in a very early day, and afterward lived on his farm for a number of years, when he rented it and moved to Beaver Dam for the purpose of giving his children better school advantages. After residing in Beaver Dam two years, he bought and located on a farm in Burnett Township which is now owned by William FOLSOM, after which he owned and lived on several different farms. In the spring of 1873 he returned to the old homestead and here died on the 20th of November of that year. He was enterprising and successful and from the time he was eleven years of age made his own way in the world. He was quite active in local politics and served one term very ably in the Wisconsin State Legislature, and held various local official positions. He became well known throughout Dodge and adjoining counties, and his reputation for integrity and honesty of purpose remained untarnished throughout his long and useful life. His widow passed away November 5, 1879. John C. SHERMAN is the only son and the third child in a family of four children born to his parents, the other members being: Ellen S., wife of George H. LAWRENCE, of Burnett Junction; Mervella, wife of Cyrus PERRY, of Dodge County; Myra L., wife of George W. MERRILL, of this State. While learning the details of agriculture on his father's farm, he was also initiated into the mysteries of learning in the common schools near his rural home, and further improved his knowledge by attending the schools of Beaver Dam. After the death of his father and estate was settled, he took charge of the home farm and is now its owner. Since it has come into his possession, he has made some valuable improvements on the place and has a large, neat and substantial residence, and two fine barns for the protection of his stock and grain. On the 23rd of November 1876, he led to the altar in Burnett Township, Miss Irene SMITH, a daughter of Garrett SMITH, a farmer of this township, but a native of the State of New York, who died in this section at the age of forty-four years. Mrs. SHERMAN was born, reared and educated here, and her union with Mr. SHERMAN has resulted in the birth of two children; Sidney M. and Clarence Elmo. Though formerly a stanch Republican in politics, Mr. SHERMAN has of late years supported the Prohibition party. He has held a number of local official positions and has served in the capacity of supervisor four terms, and township treasurer two terms. He has always been interested in the public schools, and as a member of the school board of his district endeavored to secure competent instructors. He is a substantial citizen and deservedly well respected. Submitted by Carol
